Younger players are starting to learn the importance of getting after the quarterback, meaning we saw plenty of sophomore pass rushers have big seasons across the state this year.
Let’s take a look at who they are…
London Merritt – Woodward Academy
One of the fastest-rising defenders in Georgia for the 2025 class, Merritt is seeing his stock take off after a massive sophomore season. Playing on a loaded and talented Woodward Academy defense, the 6-foot-3 230-pounds is strong, explosive off the ball, and can play multiple positions on the defensive line. He can make an impact on the inside, but can also provide pressure off the edge. On MaxPreps, it says Merritt has six sacks on the season which ranks first among pass rushers in the state for the 2025 class. He can win with speed, power, and knows how to make a play when near the quarterback. Look for more offers to roll in sooner than later for the Atlanta native.
Dylan Torrico – Blessed Trinity
Another quick, versatile defender, Torrico can line up at linebacker or set the edge on the end of the defensive line. He’s smart, instinctive, and even as a sophomore, he knows how to get after the quarterback. The Roswell native has good size for his age at 5-foot-11 210-pounds. He plays hard, he’s physical, and knows how to get off blocks and make plays in the backfield. He plays for a winning program, and the sophomore played winning football all season long this year. He’s made six sacks on the season according to MaxPreps, and three of them came in a big win over Eagle’s Landing Christian early in the season. He made a lot of plays in year two, so expect him to have a massive career at Blessed Trinity over the next two seasons after this one.
Kobby Sakyi-Prah – Roswell
A breakout defensive lineman to know in Fulton County, the talented Roswell Hornet sophomore has had a big 2022 season and has flashed D1 potential time after time. Another versatile defender with quickness and a lengthy frame, Sakyi-Prah made lots of plays in the backfield this year and has no problem getting after the quarterback. Whether he’s line up inside or on the edge, if he’s not blocked properly, he’s going to make a big play in the backfield. He also knows how to deliver a big hit once he gets there. He shows impressive athleticism for his age and can bully opposing linemen at times. He’s made an impressive 52 tackles on the season, he’s made six sacks, and has pressured the quarterback consistently all season. He’s a new 2025 defensive lineman to know about right now.
Quavion Pitts – Langston Hughes
A tough, physical defensive lineman with a good motor, Pitts is having a very nice sophomore season for arguably the best overall team in Georgia. It’s not easy to find playing time as a sophomore on a talented roster like Langston Hughes’, but that’s what Pitts has been able to do. He’s strong, moves well laterally, and has a knack for making plays in the backfield and getting to the quarterback. He fights off blocks, does his job, and is only getting better the more he plays. He absolutely a new defensive lineman in the Atlanta area to keep an eye on for the next few years. He’s made 4 sacks on the season and more are likely come in the playoffs this month.
