Here are some Maroons who stood out:
Jaylin Thompson
Jaylin Thompson
Thompson arrived in the semifinals with 22 catches for 305 yards. He’s a good athlete as evidenced by him running on the track team’s 4×100. Watching him in this game, you can see why he’ll be at Iowa next season as a preferred walk-on after turning down a scholarship from Northern Illinois. He’s physical, and is a willing and able blocker. That will serve him well on the next level.
The Penn State recruit can sling it and also extends plays with his legs. He completed more than 65 percent of his passes this season with 18 touchdowns against only four picks. He also rushed for three scores. Development time will be needed at the next level, but the upside is sizable.
Highlights
Ra’Shawd Davis
Ra’Shawd Davis
Davis displays an advanced game for a young guy. He runs hard but with patience. He accelerates quickly and does a nice job seeing the openings. He shows good power already, but he should be able to break more tackles moving forward as he matures. Davis rushed 12 times for 58 yards and a score against Valley Friday.
Rakers is a road grader in cleats. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound junior clears the way for a potent Maroon rushing attack. Rakers impressively combines power, physicality and athleticism. He understands leverage. He stays low and drives.
Highlights
Phillips complements Davis nicely. He runs tough, doing his most damage between the tackles. He breaks tackles and keeps his legs powering forward through the whistle. He rushed for 12 touchdowns this season, and led the Maroons with 72 yards on 14 carries in the semifinals.
