We had sacks, untimely fumbles, and a costly interception. With two of the best quarterbacks in the state leading the way, many were expecting a high scoring, back-and-forth contest. Surprisingly, this contest went into halftime tied, at 0-0. The stalemate was broken in the third quarter when WR De’Tyrian McCoy took a screen 42 yards to give Waxahachie the lead, 7-0. With about 4 minutes remaining in the game, Westfield QB PJ Hatter found a streaking Dajohn Palomo for a 67-yard touchdown. In the end, Spring Westfield prevailed 10-7, on the Mustangs’ biggest play of the game. They advance to the State Quarterfinals for the first time since 2019, where they will face Duncanville.
In this article, we take a look at a handful of the Waxahachie Indians’ senior playmakers.
OT Alex Stier – 6’3″ 275 /@AlexStier_
The Indians’ starting right tackle, Stier is a gritty offensive lineman who plays the game with a mean streak. In pass protection, he kick slides well and keeps his quarterback upright. In the run game, he consistently gets a good initial punch and drives defensive ends, paving the way for his running back. A highly effective puller as well, he can become a quality starter for a smaller program.
RB Jayden Becks – 5’10” 195 / @JaydenBecks2023
Regular Season Stats (10 games): 632 rush yards and 8 touchdowns
A Houston Christian commit, Becks showed up in a big way for the Indians in 2022. He’s going to find a nice home at the next level as a change of pace back who can blow a game wide open and really add another dimension to an offense. On film, he explodes to the mesh point and shows some nice change of direction, all while finding the cutback lane and making big plays happen. Should develop into a very nice player at the next level.
QB Roderick Hartsfield Jr. – 6’2″ 210 / @Roderick10Jr
Regular Season Stats (10 games): 939 pass yards, 10 touchdowns, 6 interceptions; 55% completion
Hartsfield committed to Alcorn State in mid-July, and it’s easy to see why the Braves want him so badly. He checks all the boxes of what you want in a quarterback prospect – size, poise, elusiveness, and leadership. While it’s sad to see his high school career come to an end before Dallas, I have no doubt this is just the beginning of a great career for the blossoming signal-caller.
WR De’Tyrian McCoy – 5’10” 180 / @de7yrian
Regular Season Stats (10 games): 24 receptions, 355 yards, 2 touchdowns
The Northwestern State commit is an elusive slot receiver that you can line up just about anywhere. He explodes off the line of scrimmage and shows an ability to beat press coverage, which is a necessity when making the transition to college football. Also a reliable blocker on the perimeter who will do anything it takes to win, McCoy is sure to have plenty of fans in Natchitoches over the next four years.
