The Class 5A state championship game is set for Saturday afternoon at 1PM in Edmond as #2 Carl Albert will square off with #6 McAlester for the gold ball. The Buffaloes return to Edmond for the second straight year while Carl Albert is hunting for their sixth gold ball in the last seven after missing out on a trip to Edmond last year. In this post, we’re taking a look at some of the Carl Albert Titans that you need to know about heading into Saturday afternoon’s game. At the start of this season, we mentioned how not only would Carl Albert be the favorite this season, but they would be the team to watch in Class 5A moving forward with some big impact players in the younger classes. On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore defensive lineman Caden Davis Caden Davis 6’0″ | LB Carl Albert | 2025 State OK leads that group. On the season, Davis has 18 sacks on the season and he’s elevated his game to another level in the playoffs. In the last two weeks, a shutout win over Del City and a dominating semifinal win over Grove, Davis finished with four and three sacks respectively. The Carl Albert defense did a great job of putting pressure on the Ridgerunners and containing their running game. They’ll need the same performance this week against McAlester. Davis also has come in on offense and scored seven rushing touchdowns this year.
Carl Albert’s offense has a few big weapons that are going to be playing power five college football. But you can make the argument that the engine that makes this offense go is senior quarterback Reed Dequasie Reed Dequasie 6’2″ | DB Carl Albert | 2023 State OK . We were at the game in which Dequasie went down with a broken collarbone against Coweta and at the game in which he played his first meaningful football since the injury against Bishop McGuinness. And we think it’s possible that if Dequasie doesn’t go down, the Titans win that week zero game. And if he didn’t come back against McGuinness, the Titans might not win that night either. Carl Albert has an offense that certainly prides themselves on strong power running and Dequasie is part of it. But as he showed in the semifinals, don’t overlook his ability to throw it and get the ball to his weapons at receiver.
We mentioned earlier that the Titans have a few players that will be playing power five football. One of those players is senior standout Tashawn James Tashawn James 6’2″ | DB Carl Albert | 2023 State OK , who has been committed to Iowa State since June. On offense, James is a wide receiver who can put a lot of pressure on the defense even though the Titans primarily are a run-first offense. But then James turns around and is an absolute star on the defensive side of the ball at safety. James had a great performance against Grove and was once again a name that kept popping up in some of Carl Albert’s biggest games of the season. Whether it’s on offense or defense, James is a player to keep an eye on with the championship game coming up Saturday afternoon. James made plays in the semifinal win over Grove and he’s looking to do the same thing this weekend.
Similar to Caden Davis Caden Davis 6’0″ | LB Carl Albert | 2025 State OK , the Titans have another standout 2025 prospect in Trey Washington Trey Washington 6’3″ | WR Carl Albert | 2025 State OK . We first found out about Washington following his freshman season when he emerged as one of Carl Albert’s leading receivers. With the Titans being more of a run-first offense this season, Washington doesn’t have as much production on the offensive side of the ball this year. But similar to James, Washington is a playmaker at wide receiver but then turns around and is a safety standout on defense. When it comes to Washington as a prospect, he will more than likely stick to the offensive side of the ball but don’t overlook what he can do on the defensive side of the ball. In some of the bigger games of the year, Washington has had a knack for coming down with interceptions in big moments. The Titans will look for him to be heavily involved on both sides of the ball.
Last but not least is the best player in the match-up and that’s Carl Albert junior running back Xavier Robinson Xavier Robinson 6’2″ | 225 lbs | RB Carl Albert | 2024 State OK . It’s hard to argue what Robinson has done this season. He has completely shattered the single season rushing record at Carl Albert, a program that has produced a running back or two in their history. he also has 37 rushing touchdowns on the season. Robinson makes 200+ yards and three touchdowns look like a walk in the park. We’ve seen the Titans three times this season in person and each time, Robinson looks like he’s better than the previous game. For example, Robinson ran for 265 yards (the third most this year) and three touchdowns on just 14 carries against Grove in the semifinals. It was a dominant performance and if that’s any indication for what he’s going to do on Saturday, that bodes well for the Titans.
