That type of attention is probably par for the course in every game Sellers plays in for South Florence the rest of this year.
And it doesn’t bother the Bruins quarterback or his head coach one bit.
“LaNorris is good at being focused. He’s good at compartmentalizing,” South Florence head coach Drew Marlowe said. “I think that the college coaches being at the game, that doesn’t affect him.”
The highly sought-after strong-armed quarterback (and current Syracuse verbal commit) is certainly giving college recruiters reason to stay involved. Sellers combined for 456 yards and five touchdowns in Friday’s 56-21 victory at Myrtle Beach.
It was another highlight-reel inducing game for a player who is just 5 yards away from 2,300 on the season (unofficially) and 34 total touchdowns in eight games. Against the Seahawks, Sellers (pictured) threw for 316 yards and four scores and rushed another nine times for 140 yards and a touchdown.
It was the biggest reason why the Bruins went from trailing 14-0 nine-plus minutes into the game to leading by four touchdowns before the end of the third quarter.
As far as his recruiting goes, Sellers said after the game that he’s still a hard Syracuse commitment (there were questions after he was offered by Coastal Carolina a couple weeks back) and said it might take a staff change in northern New York for him to decommit.
That doesn’t mean the South Carolinas of the world or other programs closer to home aren’t going to keep trying.
OTHER BRUINS STANDOUTS
Senior receiver Evin Singletary Evin Singletary 5'9" | 160 lbs | WR South Florence | 2023 State SC was a nuisance for Myrtle Beach, hauling in six passes for 154 yards and two first-half touchdowns. He caught a 57-yard score from Sellers with 1:54 left in the first quarter and then added a 45-yarder midway in the second quarter to help a four-touchdown run for the Bruins within a 12-minute span of game time.
If Singletary was the deep threat, Shikeem Shilow was the consistent producer on the ground.
The 5-foot-3, 160-pound tailback finished the night with 20 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns. He only had one fourth-quarter carries.
As far as defensive standouts, look no further than one of the anomalies on that side of the ball.
While South Florence is mostly stocked with productive but shorter players, safety Dirrick Goodman Dirrick Goodman 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB South Florence | 2024 State SC (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) looks the part and had two interceptions. The first was turned into a South Florence touchdown that knotted the game at 14-14; the second led to the sixth Bruins touchdown of the night and effectively put the final nail in the coffin.
NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED
Myrtle Beach figured it would be a year before Wyatt Cannon would be in charge. But the junior back-up put in another solid effort in his second straight week leading the offense.
After normal starter Trey Dunn Trey Dunn 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Myrtle Beach | 2023 State SC went down to an injury in the 82-42 loss to Hartsville last week, Cannon threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns. He followed up his career night by throwing for 229 yards and a touchdown against a significantly better defense. Cannon did get intercepted twice (see: Goodman). However, Myrtle Beach knows it can afford those if it’s quarterback is also producing more often than not.
A couple weeks ago, Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson tipped us off to junior Latrell Griffin during a practice. After two games, the combo receiver/tailback has three touchdowns after adding a receiving score against South Florence. With 19 touches in two games, Griffin has accounted for 136 yards and those three scores.
