Ayden Davis Ayden Davis 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB York | 2024 State SC connected with Keyshawn Davis wide open in the back of the end zone for a touchdown with 57 seconds left in the game to make it 28-19. Game over, right? Nope.
LaDarius Cloud took the kickoff back 88 yards to the house to cut York’s lead to 28-26 with 27 seconds left in the contest. The onside kick was unsuccessful as the Cougars held on for the win.
The Bruins opened the game up with a long kickoff return to York’s 35-yard line. Mikal McCollum Mikal McCollum 5'8" | 160 lbs | RB Lancaster | 2024 State SC would get Lancaster on the board with a 4-yard run to make it 7-0 Lancaster with 8:59 in the first quarter.
Two penalties hurt Lancaster where they had a chance to go up two touchdowns in the second quarter, but Daniel Vincent booted a 40-yard field goal to increase the lead to 10-0 with 9:41 to play before the half.
Davis showed us why he is such a danger running the football throughout the night. He faked out the entire defense on a 21-yard gain on the read option before somehow spinning out of two tackles on a QB sweep to get the Cougars back in the game at 10-7 on a 9-yard run with 4:27 to play before the halftime break.
York opened the second half with a long kickoff return down the left sideline to the Lancaster 27. That led to a 27-yard Ayden Davis Ayden Davis 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB York | 2024 State SC run for a score as he dodged tackles to increase the Cougar lead to 13-10 with 11:04 to play in the third quarter.
What ensued was a long, clock consuming drive from Lancaster with a heavy dose of McCollum and JaRon Stevenson, who was elusive on the zone read throughout the night. Both were impressive to watch on the run in between the tackles and down the sideline. The drive resulted in a Vincent 27-yard field goal with 3:06 to play in the third, tying the game at 13.
Davis kicked off the fourth quarter with his third touchdown of the night for York, a 3-yard TD run giving them a 20-13 lead with 11:55 in the fourth. Stevenson would score for Lancaster on a 8-yard TD run on the zone read off the right side, but the extra point was missed to cut the Cougar lead to 20-19 with 5:17 to play in the game.
