Review
On paper, this matchup didn’t appear to have the makings of a shootout, but that’s exactly how the game played out for four quarters between the Chaparral Wolverines and the Douglas County Huskies. This game was a back-and-forth contest all through out as both teams went score-for-score, with the game not being decided until the Wolverines last possession as they were able to score the final touchdown to put the game out of reach for the Huskies, 44-31. With this game, Chaparral was able to get their first win of conference play and their first win on the season in general and Douglas County will look to rebound next week as they move to 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. It was very difficult to pick just three players from this game who stood out, because there were simply so many great performances, but these were the three players who I felt had the strongest night.
Players of the Game
Camden Vogt, Chaparral Wolverines (RB/DB)(Sr.)(3) – Vogt was one of the more important pieces of the Wolverines first victory of the season on both sides of the ball. Looking at his numbers against the Douglas County Huskies, Vogt accounted for 48 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown on 12 carries (4.0 YPC) as well as 14 yards receiving on offense, while also registering a remarkable 13 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, a sack, a pass deflection, and a momentum shifting interception on defense. For the sake of this article, we’ll focus on his defensive tape since that was the side that felt his presence the most. When you watch Vogt’s tape against the Huskies offense, you can see his outstanding ability to always be around the ball, as he shows a ball hawking nature to his play and a thorough understanding of how different route concepts work off of each other and where the offense is trying to go with the ball on every series. Tall, long DB (6’1, 180 lbs) that can win with physicality at the line when in press coverage. Good use of hands when stacking and shedding blockers and getting to the ball carrier. Shows a good ability to consistently tackle ball carriers in the open field, rarely losing 1-on-1 situations. Reliable in both man and zone coverage, with his length and technique allowing him to win at every level of the field against most boundary receivers. Excellent athleticism, foot speed, and agility allow him to play almost any role in the defensive backfield at a high level. Vogt isn’t currently ranked on any recruiting services but he’s absolutely a talented DB that could play at a very high level collegiately.
Jake Stonebraker Jake Stonebraker 6'1" | 200 lbs | ATH Douglas County | 2024 State CO , Douglas County Huskies (RB/LB)(Jr.)(24) – The Huskies leaned on Stonebraker in every phase of the game as it wouldn’t be far fetched to suggest that there’s no way the Huskies are even remotely in this game without the performance from Stonebraker on both sides of the ball. Diving into Stonebraker’s numbers against the Wolverines, he accounted for 175 yards rushing on 22 carries (8.0 YPC) as well as 15 yards passing and 11 yards receiving on offense, while also registering 5 tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a pass deflection on defense. Much like Vogt, we’ll focus on Stonebraker’s defensive traits for the sake of this article. Putting on the film of Stonebraker’s performance against Chaparral, you can see Stonebraker shows incredible explosiveness and physicality in all phases of the game. Incredibly aggressive defender with an exceptional motor that shows up when pursuing the ball carrier and at the point-of-attack. Physical defender that brings a ton of power behind his pads when making contact with the opposing blocker or ball carrier. Explosive, downhill run defender that can quickly fill his run fits or set the edge on a ball carrier trying to bounce outside. Displays excellent versatility in pass coverage, as he’s able to drop into underneath and intermediate zone coverage, buzz the flat, and go man-to-man against most opposing TEs and RBs all at a very high level. Ball hawk of a defender that always seems to make a play on the ball whenever he’s in the general vicinity, whether intercepting a pass or forcing a fumble. Stonebraker isn’t currently rated the number 1 athlete and the number 18 player overall for the class of 2024, with that coming as no surprise looking at his performance against the Wolverines. Stonebraker will certainly play at the highest levels of college football and will be a fun player to watch through the rest of his prep career.
Brayden Munroe Brayden Munroe ATH Chaparral | 2023 State CO , Chaparral Wolverines (CB/WR)(Sr.)(6) – Munroe, without a doubt, had the most dominant performance of any player on either team in this game, standing head-and-shoulders over everybody else on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Diving into Munroe’s numbers against the Huskies, he accounted for 134 yards receiving and a receiving touchdown on 8 receptions (16.8 YPR) on the offensive side, while also accounting for 2 tackles, a tackle for a loss, a pass deflection, and a huge interception on the defensive side. As if that wasn’t enough, he returned both a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown on special teams. If that isn’t the best player on the field, I don’t know who is. Much like the previous players, I’ll only break down his defensive tape, but for Munroe more so because writing about all of the other traits he shows on offense and special teams would require it’s own article. With that being said, when you watch the tape from Munroe’s night against the Douglas County offense, the first thing that jumps out about him is his elite explosiveness while breaking downhill out of his back pedal to come down for run support or while turning up field to run with a receiver. Technically sound DB that doesn’t surrender technique while maintaining excellent foot speed and lateral agility, which allows him to stay on top of receivers that are running up field while also allowing him to maintain tight coverage on sharper breaking short and intermediate routes. Displays good force at the point-of-contact with the ball carrier when making a tackle. Shows a good understanding of how to shed blocks on the boundary and seal the edge by not over-pursuing the ball carrier. Deceptively physical and aggressive that doesn’t solely rely on speed and athleticism to win the rep. Munroe is currently rated the number 8 athlete and the number 73 player overall for the class of 2023, but that ranking is pretty low considering how dominant he has been. Munroe is easily one of the best players in the state and has the film, production, and frame (6’2, 190 lbs) to back it up and will certainly be a high level player for whatever program he plays for in college.
