I am listing the players who’s stat line stood out, who people recommended but most importantly, ONLY players who either I watched live or was able to watch highlights from their specific game. For the best chance to be featured, send me your weekly film on twitter. My handle is “@DevinRecord”, please don’t have any hard feelings if you weren’t included.
Kyle Maniktoth
Kyle Maniktoth
Kyle’s a player who I have mentioned before in this series of articles, back in week 1. He’s been a very dominant cornerback all season long, locking up his half of the field quite often. Against Central Kitsap HS, that didn’t change. He did not allow a single pass all game and contributed 3 solo tackles on the day. He’s got great feet, being able to stay with his receiver fairly easily. His hip movement, as I mentioned before, is quite impressive. He easily turns his hips and keeps in stride while adjusting. He’s been able to close out on the ball quickly all season and I don’t think that will change. He’s someone to watch the second half of the season.
Sunny Nguyen
Sunny Nguyen
Sunny has been one of the most impressive 2025 defensive backs I have watched so far this season. He was mentioned a couple weeks back for his 2 interceptions in a game. He deserves another mention for his play against Gig Harbor HS. He didn’t have an interception but he did deflect two passes and tally up 4 tackles on the night. His speed to the ball is impressive, being able to close the gap quickly. Despite being just a sophomore, his ball recognition is fantastic. His IQ on the field is very high for a player of his class as well. I have noticed his open-field tackling has been improving as the weeks go on. He’s a defensive back to watch for the years coming.
Ambrose Marsh
Ambrose Marsh
Ambrose has had a very good junior season so far. He’s had a standout game against Kennedy Catholic but his play against O’Dea HS week 5, was the best he’s been on the field. He was flying all over the defense, getting involved quite a bit. He compiled 6 tackles, 1 interception, 1 pass break-up, and 1 fumble recovery. His interception was a perfect read by the junior to cut in front of the pass to get the turnover. He’s quick on the football field, showing the off in many ways. He blitzed from his cornerback position and got to the quarterback very fast and delivered a big, well timed hit. With the help of his speed, he can quickly recover to stay close to the wide receiver he is guarding.
Dylan Rose
Dylan Rose
Dylan was mentioned recently on the offensive side of the ball as a running back, but this week he will be mentioned as a defensive back for his stellar play against Marysville-Getchell HS. Week 5 against them, he compiled 13 tackles to go along with 1 interception. He even scored a touchdown on the night as well. He enjoys contact, embracing the ball carrier at full speed every chance he gets. His reads the ball carrier are outstanding, being able to sense which gap the offensive player might go through before they do. He’s been having a great senior season for Mount Vernon.
Malachi is a senior who I have watched film on quite a few times. He’s a top 25 defensive back in his class for a reason. He’s very fun to watch on the field. He closes in on passes well, breaking up quite a few. He tackles well in the open field, being able to wrap up ball carriers feet fairly quickly. He avoids blocks well, getting involved in the play. His anticipation while playing in the defensive back field is some of the best in his class, and he’s proved that this season. His foot work, hip movement, among other things are improving each week. He keeps up with the receivers extremely well, he finished his week 5 game against Puyallup HS with 6 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass break-up. He’s someone to watch as the year wraps up.
