I am listing the players who’s stat line stood out, who people recommended but most importantly, ONLY players who either I watched live or was able to watch highlights from their specific game. For the best chance to be featured, send me your weekly film on twitter. My handle is “@DevinRecord”, please don’t have any hard feelings if you weren’t included.
Connor Murrweiss
Connor Murrweiss
Connor is a natural on the defensive line. He’s fast off the line, quickly getting to the backfield when the ball is snapped. He wraps up the running back nicely in the backfield, having the grip strength to wrap him up. His speed is beneficial when tracking down the quarterback or running back when they go to the opposite side, and Connor won’t stop until he gets his hands on the ball carrier. He’s been improving by the week and I don’t expect that to change. He’ll be a player to keep an eye on as the season goes on.
Jake is an absolute stud on both sides of the ball but really excels on the defensive side. Week 4 against Arlington HS, Mason contributed 5 tackles, 4 of them being quarterback sacks. During this game, Jake became the all-time sacks leader in the history of Whatcom County. Congratulations to Jake for achieving this milestone. He’s quick off the line, is strong, and is absolutely relentless in taking down that opposing quarterback. He’s going to be a steal to any college that swoops him up after this season, incredibly hard worker.
Benjamin Dutton
Benjamin Dutton
Benjamin has a big frame standing at 6’4″, so he outmatches quite a few offensive lineman in the state. Week 4 against Blaine HS, Dutton was getting by the offensive line quite easily. In fact, there was many times he went untouched and just sped right by the offensive lineman. He wrapped up the quarterback and the running back consistently all night long as Kings HS held Blaine’s offense for minimal damage.
Julian is a top 5 defensive lineman in his class for a reason and I have already mentioned him during this series before. Julian, of course did his thing on the defensive side of the ball contributing 6 tackles, 1 being for loss. He used his strength to push lineman to the side to get the ball carrier. He also displayed his solid pass rushing technique all night long. One thing that also stood out was his contributions on offense. He caught 4 passes for 59 yards and even rushed for a touchdown.
LJ is another top defensive lineman in the ’23 class. He’s been putting in work all off-season to improve his technique and it’s been paying off in the early going this year. Eastside-Catholic has been playing great defense, only allowing 28 points through the first 4 games. Against Roosevelt HS, LJ was patient on the line, moved his feet very well, and showed off versatility. He lined up on the outside of the line as well as the inside, and was efficient at both spots. LJ and the rest of the defensive line will have to keep the level of play at a high as we roll into the late part of the season.
