Milton Starting to Heat Up
It was a rocky start to the season for Milton, a usual powerhouse in the state of Georgia. The Eagles stumbled to a 2-3 start, leaving some to wonder if it was just a rebuild year. However, as I predicted, Milton is riding a 3 game winning streak and is set up for a winner take all game in region 6 against Lambert to close the season. As it has been for most of the season, the Milton defense, led by a loaded DB group, is playing at a high level. Now, the offense is starting to come around. Their work isn’t done, but Milton has a chance to become one of the hottest teams in Georgia headed into the postseason.
Lumpkin County Adds Another Chapter to Storied Season
Lumpkin County, a usual doormat, is one of the best stories of the season. Under new head coach Heath Webb, the Indians are in the midst of their best season possibly ever. Friday night, Lumpkin County snapped a 5-game losing streak against region rival White County, outscoring the Warriors 56-35. All season, the Indians have had an extremely balanced and potent offense, and that showed up again this past Friday. A playoff birth is already locked up for Lumpkin County, which is huge for the program, but their sights are aimed higher as a massive matchup against Dawson County is on the horizon.
Cass Bounces Back, Remains in the Hunt for Playoff Spot
Cass is one of the younger teams in the state, but they have shown some grit and the ability to bounce back from tough losses all season long. Last night, the Colonels gritted out a win over Hiram, who was riding high on momentum coming into the game. Freshman QB Brodie McWhorter emerged in the middle of the season, and he had a huge night to lift the Colonels to victory. Up next for Cass is a trip to Calhoun, where a Cass victory will secure a postseason spot.
Statement Victory for Grayson
Grayson vs Brookwood was thought to be one of the biggest matchups of the week. The Rams had their way with the Broncos, cruising to a 42-14 record. As he has all season, Grayson QB JD Davis has given the Rams a dimension to the offense that they didn’t have that year. You can always count on Coach Carter putting a solid defense on the field, and now that they have a QB producing at a high level, the Rams are certainly a real threat to win the state title. As for Brookwood, the Broncos have played one of the hardest schedules in the country, yet still remain in the playoff picture.
Rome Continues Region Dominance
Rome was considered the favorite to win their region coming into the season, but I am not sure anyone expected them to dominate at the level they have been. They knocked off Allatoona 42-19, Woodstock 70-0, Sequoyah 52-0, and most impressively, they beat a tough River Ridge squad on Friday 52-7. QB Reece Fountain Reece Fountain 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Rome | 2024 State GA has been one of the best signal callers in the state this season and the Wolves have had a stout defense all season, those two things alone are a winning recipe. Keep an eye out for this weekend, as the Wolves host a battle-tested Creekview team. The Grizzlies might have the best chance to hand the Wolves their first region loss of the year, which is still a very tall task.
