I got a chance to see Coal City LIVE in action as they took on the Peotone Blue Devils. With that being said, let’s take a look at some of the Coal City Coalers that caught my eye and need to watch for the rest of this fall season.

Mr. Reilly had a good showing Friday night getting it done in both offensive attacks. In th air attack, he showcased his ability to add zip on the ball when hitting shots up the seam and adding touch on deep shots downfield which resulted in the first TD of the night to ATH Derek Carlson. Not to mention he got into the endzone once in the ground game off a QB sneak right after he got stopped on the one-yard line from QB design run. This young man finished the night with 3 total TDs on the night, two coming from the air and one off the QB sneak. Currently, he has interest from various teams across the D2/D3 levels. Twitter

I heard a lot about Mr. Benson this season coming into this matchup and it held true. His ability to be a gamechanger to swing momentum and break long runs is one to watch. Late in the game, this young man was able to take a kickoff return 85 yards before getting brought down inside the 10 swinging momentum back into the Coaler’s favor after letting up a TD. He also got into the endzone for six in the 3rd as well. What stands out the most about this young man is how he can play through contact with his low center of gravity breaking weak grab tackles in the process. This was seen throughout the game where he would shrug off hits and keep his legs driving to keep the sticks moving. He did also flash his vision to find cutback lanes as well and when he did he would break long runs in the process. Keep a close eye on this up-and-coming halfback the Coalers have. Twitter

Mr. Carlson is used primarily on punt returns and flashes his foot quicks when he hits the alley for a solid return for the Coalers. On offense, he can run jet sweeps threatening to turn the corner along the sideline and when he does he can gain a step on defenders to keep the chains moving. What really caught my eye was his TD catch early in the game where he won over the top on a deep shot downfield on 4th down. Here, this young man was able to go up for the 50/5o ball in double coverage to secure the contested catch. Translate this to the defensive side of the ball where he works as a corner, you see the same when he came away with an INT and had a good return setting up the Coalers in a good starting field position. This young man also isn’t afraid to get involved in run support securing open field tackles on the perimeter as well as making tackles in the flat. All in all, this is a young man that has the potential to play at the next level on either side of the ball.

Mr. Wickiser came up BIG late in the 2nd on a deep shot downfield. His QB Braden Reilly got flushed out of the pocket rolling to his left and had to make a cross-body throw into the endzone as a last-ditch effort to get points on the board. This young man was able to cross the defender’s face and layout in the endzone to secure the TD catch with a sea of bodies around him. It’s this type of ability that caught my eye and is one to keep an eye on for the rest of this fall season. Twitter

Mr. Davy works as a Mike backer on the defensive side of the ball and is the signal caller for the Coaler’s defensive unit. This young man flashes his ability to plug gaps in run support and did a good job all night securing tackles on the perimeter as well as in the flat. Late in the 4th, he was able to come away with a game-sealing INT. Twitter

Mr. Dames is a new name to me this fall season and one that caught my eye with his pass protection. Here, he stays square and tie up the rushing defender once he’s latched on taking away the blindside rush. He was also able to wash defensive linemen down when blocking in line as well as flashed his ability to drive defenders back creating a hole for his ball carrier as well. Twitter

Mr. Young can work both as a slot receiver as well as a defensive end. On offense, he can make the catch up the seam and then break weak grab tackles in the process to gain extra yards on the play. Where he really came through was on the defensive side of the ball where he was either plugging the B/C gap forcing the ball carrier to bounce the play outside or being a wide 9 to disrupt plays along the perimeter for a loss on the play. All in all, this is a versatile young man that won’t always dominate the stat sheet but he does his assignments well and can make a play or two in run support as well.
