Cam Cumbee, QB, Andrews
Cumbee is all of 5-foot-8. He weighs 145 pounds. But the quarterback and defensive back has been instrumental in Andrews’ five-game winning streak. Against Green Sea Floyds on Friday, Cumbee completed seven of his eight pass attempts for 154 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran once for 26 yards. Considering he rotates series on offense (with younger bother Brandon) and also starts in the defensive backfield, Cumbee is making the most of his snaps behind center.
Edward Garcia, K, Loris
Want to know why Garcia is here? We asked longtime Lions’ radio broadcaster how long it’s been since a Loris kicker booted three field goals in a game, and Hardee’s response was “Not in my time.” His time, by the way, dates back to the mid-1970s. Garcia hit a 30-yarder in the first quarter of Friday’s win over Lake View, added a 26-yard shot in the second and then a 21-yarder in the third. He also knocked in his PAT, giving him a 10-point evening in a game that produced 26 total points.
Darren Lloyd, RB, West Florence
The Knights senior has had bigger statistical games this year. After all, he topped 100-yard in each of West Florence’s first three contests. But it wouldn’t be hard to say what he did against Byrnes wasn’t his most impressive effort. Against the Class 5A powerhouse, Lloyd (pictured) had 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground and three receptions for 41 yards and the game-winning touchdown with just 10 seconds left.
Scott Saylor Scott Saylor 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Carolina Forest | 2023 State SC , QB, Carolina Forest
Where Saylor goes this year, Carolina Forest goes. On Friday, the Panthers went just fine. The senior quarterback threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 73 yards and a score in Carolina Forest’s 49-21 win over North Myrtle Beach. Saylor operated efficiently yet again, orchestrating scoring drives that took as long as 7 minutes, 47 seconds and other that needed less than a minute. He’s one of a handful of potential Region V-5A POY candidates.
Nathan Schuessler, WR, Carolina Forest
When Schuessler went off for 191 receiving yards (and a touchdown) in Friday’s win over North Myrtle Beach, he put himself on a pretty thin list of receivers in recent school history, and bested every other yardage mark during coach Marc Morris’ nine-season tenure. He topped his own career high by 57 yards, giving him his third career 100-yard game. That was The Panthers had just two 100-yard receiving games in 2021 (one belonging to Schuessler) and none in 2020.
