In order to make those deep playoff runs and win the big games you need a good defense. A good defense consists of aggressive, smart and fast guys. Here are some of my favorite defenses I’ve seen so far.
Picayune
Picayune defense is coming along pretty well this season. These guys are getting after the football and they aren’t giving up many points. They can play against any style team. They truly get after the football and they aren’t friendly when they play. This is a tough squad.
Jamonta Waller Jamonta Waller 6'2" | 230 lbs | DL Picayune | 2024 State MS and Zavion Coleman Zavion Coleman 6'3" | 285 lbs | DL Picayune Memorial | 2023 State MS are the big guys holding down the defensive line. They get after the QB and also defend the rush well. They have Amarion Tyson Amarion Tyson 5'7" | 170 lbs | ATH Picayune Memorial | 2024 State MS playing LB. He’s set to lead the state in tackles once again and he is just a junior. Chris Davis Chris Davis 6'0" | 175 lbs | RB Picayune | 2024 State MS is the guy holding it down in the secondary.
Starkville
The Yellowjackets are very loaded on defense. This is a group that can line up and play using a lot of different defensive fronts. They have guys who can rush the QB, they have a good secondary and they have LBs that don’t mind getting aggressive. They play very fast and they also have a good understanding for the game. Coach Terrance Pope has these guys prepared.
Eric Thomas Jr Eric Thomas Jr 6'3" | 240 lbs | DL Starkville | 2023 State MS , Tony Lucious and Jon David Methvin are some dudes to deal with on their defensive line. These guys know how to get after the QB. Justin Jenkins is a LB that stuffs holes when they open up. They also have Ny’Jadus Holloway holding down the LB position. Braylon Burnside Braylon Burnside 6'1" | 180 lbs | ATH Starkville | 2024 State MS and Brandon Short is holding it for their secondary.
Louisville
Louisville has been a defensive minded team for years. These guys play fast and they play hard. That’s how they always play. It doesn’t matter if they have big guys or small guy, they like to play quick on the defensive side of the ball. They have a lot of studs this year who are handling business.
Gabriel Moore Gabriel Moore 6'4" | 245 lbs | DL Louisville | 2023 State MS is holding down the defensive line. He can line up at defensive tackle or either on the end. They have Laterrius Haynes holding down the linebacker position and he can also play safety. He is very versatile. Corxavier Coleman is a sophomore who got a lot of playing time as a freshman. Kenyon Sanders is also a stud at linebacker. They call him Wild Man. Semaj Knowles, Christavious Savior Christavious Savior 6'0" | 160 lbs | DB Louisville | 2023 State MS and Kenneth Hill are some guys that hold down their secondary. These guys get after it.
Tupelo
Tupelo has been playing some good defense this year. I think that will be the key to them possibly getting over the hump this year. Everybody knows they can score, but will they be able to stop a good offensive team when the playoffs comes. This year I’m trusting that they are going to be okay on defense.
Tristan Jernigan Tristan Jernigan 6'2" | 210 lbs | LB Tupelo | 2024 State MS is the leader of this bunch. He is a junior for them who is a big time vocal leader. He can play downhill and he can also drop back and cover. The have Tyler Vaughn and Clifton Watkins who also like to get gritty on defense. Kaylen Roddy is a name to keep up with on that side too. Fred Adams and Jayden Evans are two guys that do well in their secondary. This is a sound bunch.
