The Clippers held a 7-6, first-quarter lead before the visitors reeled off 49 unanswered points in a 55-7 victory. The game featured some impressive prospects from both teams.
It was my second time watching Beckman play this season. I’ve been very impressed both times. The first-year starter is polished. In read-option, he has a good feel for holding the mesh until he processes read and makes good decisions. When he runs, he shows nice vision and is tough to tackle. Throwing is his best trait. He can make all of the throws, displaying accuracy deep and the arm strength to throw ball into tight windows. Beckman should be receiving more attention from colleges.
Highlights
Barney stands out on both sides of the ball, making him a college prospect at linebacker or tight end. I believe he’s better on offense as a well-rounded, in-line tight end. Barney is solidly built and strong. He moves people in the run game. As a receiver, he runs crisp routes and features reliable hands. He has the speed to get deep if he has the right matchup.
Highlights
Amari’s father, Eric Thigpen, played defensive back for Iowa and was drafted into the NFL. The son is long-limbed, which helps in defending passes. He features loose hips and runs well. Although not the biggest guy in the world, he holds up well in run support from the outside.
Anderson has broken out as a first-year starter on the second level of the Lightning defense. The middle linebacker runs well laterally and does a nice job identifying his fits. He’s stout against the run and athletic enough to hold up well in coverage.
You would not know Clubb was a sophomore unless you were looking at a program. He’s big and athletic, and plays like a senior. Clubb still frequently lines up on the edge as he did as a freshman, but he’s seeing more time at outside linebacker this season. He’s versatile enough to rush the passer or drop into coverage. The ceiling is high for this guy.
Highlights
Schmidt is a true dual-threat quarterback. The senior makes good decisions off of read-option. When he keeps the ball, he shows nice vision, speed and cutting ability. He throws the ball effectively when asked and has a good arm. I could see him playing receiver or defensive back at the next level if he can’t find a home as a signal caller.
Brock Sherman
Brock Sherman
Sherman is a modern day linebacker. He’s not the biggest guy, but he runs well enough to cover receivers at this level, while physically holding up strong against the run. Depending on the defense, I could see him playing safety in college with an ability to line up in the box when needed.
