It was far from a perfect display of football, but the Seahawks showed some promising signs on both sides on both sides of the ball to begin the year.
There’s no easy way to fill the massive void of losing Notre Dame linebacker Jaylen Sneed, but the defense performed admirably for a good portion of the contest. The strength appears to be up front, led by senior and Wake Forest commit Chris Marable Chris Marable 6'4" | 280 lbs | DL Hilton Head | 2023 State SC . His presence on the line was critical for the Seahawks to neutralize the ground game early, making seven tackles and adding a sack. With his elite mechanics and power in the trenches, it will be a tall task for anyone to block him one-on-one this year. We also saw a breakout performance from Shaihk Thompson, who exploded to the ball carrier with his hustle and made it difficult for Battery Creek to establish an offensive rhythm. And Connor Wiendl stepped up at linebacker, finishing tackles and showing some Sneed-like physicality on the field. There were certainly some plays that needed to be cleaned up, but it was a solid start for a new-look group.
It’s still an ongoing quarterback competition between a pair of juniors on BJ Payne’s Seahawks, but Owen Bayes certainly delivered the better outing of the two on Saturday. After a slow start, Bayes heated up quickly, posting an efficient 70% completion percentage. He saw the whole field well and got the ball out quickly to his targets. Bayes is starting to separate himself as a high-level player at the quarterback spot. The Seahawks are still figuring out the backfield after losing Chase McCracken, but both Troy Timko Troy Timko 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Hilton Head | 2025 State SC and Tristen Simmons impressed on the ground. Timko is a strong runner and showed his ability to keep his balance and break tackles on a key touchdown run. Junior Anthony Bynum was key on the line to open holes for the Seahawks’ backs.
It’s still a work in progress for Battery Creek after the season’s first week, but the Dolphins may have found something in Jeremiah Mceachin. The senior running back averaged 10 yards per carry and showed off some excellent quickness and power throughout the day. Senior Dion Smith made a splash on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker. He plays with outstanding hustle and made some important stops while nabbing a key interception.
