Player of the Week
Nelson is the talk of the state after his record-breaking performance against James Clemons. While looking like a created player from Madden, Nelson rushed for 304 yards (school record) with 3TDS and added 10-15 150 yards 2TDS through the air. The dynamic QB showed elite quickness and speed when escaping the pocket and top-tier elusiveness in the open field. With extreme quick twitch, burst, and ability to maintain speed out his cuts, Nelson simply dismantled the defense with his legs. He also displayed effectiveness with his arm and kept the defense honest. Showed great velocity at the short and intermediate areas of the field, along with enough strength to get the ball down the field. With this video game-like performance, Nelson has propelled his name in the discussion as one of the better QBs in the state.
Standouts
Harrold Holloman
Harrold Holloman
Holloman is a receiver who showed an ability to be a No.1 guy. He has solid speed, hands, and run after the catch skill. Holloman is also a proficient route runner who can create space versus man coverage or find the hole in zone coverage. With a knack for making the first guy miss, Holloman has exceptional acceleration when operating after the catch and consistently found yards once the ball got in his hands. On only four catches, he produced 124 yards along with a touchdown which speaks to him being a certified playmaker. As the season progresses, Holloman is definitely be a receiver to keep an eye on.
Brayden Jenkins
Brayden Jenkins
Jenkins played a crucial role in Theodore’s major upset against Baker High with his north and south style and ability to use his burst and advance through the second level. With 116 yards on seven carries, Jenkins displayed home run-hitting ability. His elusiveness in the open field and close quarters consistently created hidden yardage. This natural wiggle, acceleration, and ability to move just enough to have guys miss tackles also allowed him to be productive as a pass catcher out of the backfield and contribute 32 yards and a touchdown on two catches. It’ll be interesting to see how Jenkins builds from this stand-out performance and progresses throughout the season.
Jordan Smith
Jordan Smith
Smith is a back with explosive speed and high-level playmaking ability. He accounted for 241 yards on 16 carriers and was lighting in a bottle during his performance against Dale County. With great lateral quickness and a jump cut that leaves defenders reaching for dust, Smith weaved through the defense for major gains time and time again. He also displayed solid vision to find open lanes to expose. Can get downhill in a hurry with his acceleration and has enough long speed to hit his head on the goal post if he gets past the second level. Showed solid strength when running through arm tackles and getting yards after initial contact. An underrated prospect that I look forward to seeing more of this season.
Ri Fletcher
Ri Fletcher
Fletcher is a highly versatile playmaker who shows utility on the ground as a receiver and return specialist. With 96 return yards, 59 rushing yards, and 73 yards receiving, Fletcher is easily one of the more versatile weapons in the state and played a pivotal role in Hartselle’s victory over Austin. As the swiss army knife of the offense, Fletcher is shifty in the open field and a smooth accelerator who quickly gets to a top speed. This, in addition to his natural feel for creases and gaps, makes him a threat for a 20+ yard gain with a ball in his hands. He displays a solid set of hands out of the backfield and can be a reliable check-down option that is dynamic in space and has enough speed to take flares, screens, and wheel routes to the house. With an exceptional all-around skill set, look for Fletcher to be a nontraditional work-horse, get touches in all phases of the game, and continue to be one of the better all-purpose backs in the state.
