Here are a few quarterbacks who had breakout games to kick off the 2022 high school football season…
Ben Guthrie Ben Guthrie 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Alpharetta | 2023 State GA – Alpharetta
In one of the biggest games of the weekend against 5-star Sammy Brown Sammy Brown 6'2" | 225 lbs | ATH Jefferson | 2024 State GA and a quality Jefferson defense, the Alpharetta senior had the biggest game of his career, throwing for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns. More importantly, he led the Raiders to a massive home victory in a 47-46 win. Guthrie showed poise, accuracy, and true playmaking ability, throwing a late touchdown to receiver Garrett Young that gave them the go ahead lead. With plenty of weapons surrounding him, expect Guthrie to lead a very potent Alpharetta offense throughout the 2022 season.
Loranza Lennon – North Atlanta
An under-the-radar dual-threat quarterback, Lennon was fantastic in the season opener against North Forsyth, leading his squad to a 31-27 victory. He was an effective runner, but he helped win the game with his arm, throwing for 200 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He put the ball where it needed to be and showed great leadership down the stretch, leading the comeback with two 4th-quarter touchdown passes. He also ran through North Forsyth for 94 yards and two more touchdowns. He played as well as he could, and while he may not have elite arm talent, Lennon proved he’s a winner and can light up the state sheet.
Jeremy Hecklinski Jeremy Hecklinski 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Walton | 2024 State GA – Walton
Although Hecklinski and the Raiders came out with a heart-breaking loss to Mill Creek, the Walton junior established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the state of Georgia with his performance. There was a lot of hype around Hecklinski heading into the season, but the strong-armed gunslinger lived up to the hype against a very talented Mill Creek defense.
At 6-foot-1 175-pounds, the junior showed outstanding arm talent and threw some beautiful passes deep down the field. He was accurate, threw with touch, and his ball placement was impressive all game. In a tough loss, the Walton quarterback finished 20/30 for 425 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Cameron Vaughn – Temple
A true dual-threat QB, Vaughn didn’t do a ton of passing for Temple over the weekend, but he did a whole lot of running. Clearly the top player on the field, Vaughn was almost untouchable with the ball in his hands, rushing 18 times for 270 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was smooth, electric, and showed a 2nd gear when given room to run. He even leaped over a defender on one impressive run during Temple’s 41-18 victory. Look for him to run wild through defenses all season long. He’s a dynamic weapon with his legs, and he proved it with a giant season-opener.
