The partnership between Cannon School and Concord First Assembly collectively decided to rebrand under the Cannon name this past offseason. The Cougars are led by Jamie Bolton, who is entering his 3rd year with a talented squad. The Cougars are moving up to Division 1 in the NCISAA this season, so they will play the best private school teams in North Carolina including Providence Day, and potentially others in the playoffs.
Quarterback Tyler Green Tyler Green 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Cabarrus Warriors | 2024 State NC leads the strong Cougars offense, and Green is one of the best quarterbacks you may not know much about. As a sophomore, Green put up some really impressive numbers – he threw for 33 touchdowns and over 2700 yards in leading them to a State Championship. Green is 6’2 and 205 pounds, and he really should be getting some recruiting attention with the production he’s had and the fact he’s a good-sized prospect.
Green has some good talent around him – most notably running back Will Jones Will Jones 5'11" | 195 lbs | RB Hough | 2024 State NC . Will is also a rising junior (2024) and has some ACC interest from a college perspective. Jones had 1943 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns last season, some super impressive numbers for a team that had a pretty balanced offensive attack overall. He is a solid 5’11 and 195 pounds and probably will continue to grow with 2 years left at the high school level.
The receiving core is also talented, Gavin Powell returns for his 3rd year and is a great possession target for Green and he runs very good routes. Expect Powell to be able to break some plays over the top this year as well. Colin Reese has come to the Cougars, and Bolton is very excited about inserting him into the passing game as another threat they can attack defenses with. Reese has some excellent speed and can help open underneath routes for others.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Cougars also have another player that arrived at the school in TE Henry Anthony Henry Anthony 6'5" | 235 lbs | TE Cannon | 2025 State NC , who looks like he could be a big-time player. He is a 2025 prospect who is already 6’4. I saw him at practice, and he runs very smooth routes and catches well – this will be a guy college coaches will be excited for. On the lines, expect Hayes Galloway to lead the charge – he is a natural leader and plays with excellent physicality. He’s also blessed with excellent size and 6’4 and 300 pounds.
Looking at Cannon’s schedule, the matchup against Providence Day will be an exciting measuring stick for the program as some people believe Providence Day is the best team in the state regardless of classification. Matchups against Harrells Christian and Metrolina Christian will be Division 2 playoff rematches and sure to be intense as well.
