It was a great opportunity for the teams to run reps against another team, get their playbooks and roster finalized for next week’s openers, and give the fans a taste of the season. Here are some takeaways for each team after watching Wednesday night.
Basha Bears
Basha has talent all over the field. Minus the first play of the scrimmage that resulted in a turnover, Demond Williams Demond Williams 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Basha | 2024 State AZ looked ready to go. Quick release, threw the ball everywhere, and looked slick and calm in the pocket. Cole Martin Cole Martin 5'11" | 175 lbs | DB Basha | 2023 State AZ , Oregon commit, is electric and is a big piece for this team. I was impressed by their offensive line. Big, strong front 5 that are going to give Williams all day to throw. The first run of the night I saw multiple vicious pancake blocks, watch out.
Mountain Pointe Pride
The team I wanted to see the most tonight was Mountain Pointe. I was interested and wanted to see Chris Arviso Chris Arviso 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Mountain Pointe | 2023 State AZ , 2023 quarterback, in action against some great defenses. He looked solid. I really like his talent. The worry I did have coming into the season and saw tonight was who is going to get open for Arviso. They had some glimpses that they can ride into the year, I just hope it continues all year long. Their defense held strong overall, picked off Williams from Basha in the first play and gave all the offenses a hard time.
Highland Hawks
Highland is known as a tough, physical team that will push you around, and will play solid defense that will keep them in games if needed. That looked like the case tonight and will be their identity this year. With a question mark at quarterback by trying to replace a three-year starter in Gage Dayley, Highland might have to rely on the O-line at times. That is okay, with Caleb Lomu Caleb Lomu 6'5" | 260 lbs | OL Highland | 2023 State AZ and Makua Pule Makua Pule 6'3" | 300 lbs | OL Highland | 2023 State AZ up there, they will be just fine. Defense looked tough, rallied to the ball, and will be the force of this team.
Mesquite Wildcats
New regime at Mesquite under coach Vance Miller, Miller takes over a young squad. Solid squad, and competed well against these top squads in the conference, Mesquite should feel great going into the season. Reid Harris Reid Harris 5'9" | 175 lbs | WR Mesquite | 2024 State AZ and Phillip Jones II Phillip Jones II 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Mesquite | 2024 State AZ , both class of 2024, will be a dynamic QB + WR duo in the state, and might be near the top when factoring in their age. I expect this team to compete and look very good in year 1 of the Vance Miller era.
