The time is coming fast. Summer camps are in the past, school semester is starting, and first day of official practice is here. The 2022 fall football season is quickly coming. It is officially less than a month away until the Perry Pumas kick off their season. After making it to the 6A playoffs last season, Perry has hopes to make it there again and make a run at the championship. Losing some key players on the offensive side due to graduation, Perry seeks new leadership in this upcoming season. Watch out for these players to lead the Pumas this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="110146" first="Aiden" last="Herring"], Defensive End

The top tackler from his 2023 class last season, [player_tooltip player_id="110146" first="Aiden" last="Herring"] brings a strong force to the defensive line for Perry. 6"3" 255 lbs and playing defensive end, Herring moves like a linebacker. Looks the size but plays faster than it. Clocking in at a 4.80 forty-yard dash, the speed and the strength is Aiden's key skills in his game. Good bull rush in his game and disciplined in the run game by not over committing and very good at setting the edge for the rest of his teammates. With his speed, I would love to see him test his skill in the passing game, drop back more and cover the flat, because I think he could very well. Air force commit, Herring will be near the top in tackles for his team, if not the top dog.

Brock Ford, Running Back

The top rusher from last season returns for the Pumas. Averaged 4 yards a carry, Ford became the work horse for the offense, and expected to have the same load on his shoulders this year. Great speed, and has a second gear to take the top off the secondary and get to the end zone. Hard runner, breaks tackles and takes the entire defense to bring him down. Expect more carries and ultimately more touchdowns for Ford this year.

[player_tooltip player_id="165892" first="Jack" last="Amer"], Quarterback/Athlete

Perry losing their top two passers, [player_tooltip player_id="165892" first="Jack" last="Amer"] looks like the guy to step in and lead the Perry offense. Listed as an athlete and quarterback, Amer has the skill set to do some special things this season. He showed glimpses of his athletic ability running the ball and throwing the ball last season. 72% completion percentage when asked to throw the ball last season, and over 200 yards running the ball in some circumstances, Amer will be a dual threat quarterback making defenses honor his abilities. He showed his arm strength this summer in 7 on 7, and are turning heads around the state. With a much bigger ask of him this season, expect Amer to take that step needed in order to lead this team to wins.

Jaxsen Young, Wide Receiver

With [player_tooltip player_id="165892" first="Jack" last="Amer"] coming into his first full year as the starting quarterback, he will need someone to lean on that is reliable and knows the offense. Jaxsen Young is that guy. Third leading receiver on the team last season, and with the top two graduating last spring, Young steps into that #1 spot. Dynamic playmaker, who can create space in his routes and shows great hands. Knows his location on the field and shows his ability to make any type of catch anywhere on the field. Speed that can make safeties worry about getting beat deep, and has the skill set to play out wide as well as in the slot which coaches love to see. This year will be huge for Young has he tries to take the big step in his football career. Would love to see more crisp breaks at the top of his routes, but I think he is ready to break out in 2022.

Perry has some big shoes to fill on the offensive side of the ball but should be in good shape with the athletes they have coming up. With Herring manning the defense, expect Perry to be in it all season long, and if the offense starts to click, watch out for Perry this season.
