Orange County has its deepest class of quarterbacks in recent years.
Here are the top 15 quarterbacks in Orange County’s 2023 class.
10. Gavin Shaigineik Gavin Shaigineik 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Tesoro | 2023 State CA , Tesoro
This is a tough one to evaluate because he will likely be the starter at Tesoro but they have two other competent quarterbacks in Evan Pierce Evan Pierce 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Tesoro | 2023 State CA and Kaden Watanabe. Pierce put up strong numbers in the games he played in for Tesoro last season and has a handful of lower level offers. Watanabe was at Tesoro as an underclassman, transferred to Pasco High in Washington and is now back at Tesoro. He throws a nice deep ball and has gotten some reps in passing league, but the South Coast League is a big step up in competition. Shaigineik has a quick release and solid footwork. He throws well off-platform and played pretty well for the OC Elite passing team this offseason. He could be quicker in his decision making but experience should help that. He has an offer from Charlotte.
9. Parker Awad, Edison
Awad transferred to Edison from Mater Dei last season and was one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the county. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,166 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. He isn’t a dual threat guy but he is athletic enough to extend plays with his legs and run the occasional zone/read with. He sees the field well and what makes him stand out is his accuracy and ball placement. He can throw the deep balls in places where the defender can’t get to it even if the coverage is tight. Alabama State has offered him and he has taken unofficial visits UNLV, Northern Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming.
8. Reyn Beal Reyn Beal 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Yorba Linda | 2023 State CA , Yorba Linda
Beal is so productive that Yorba Linda, who wants to be a running based offense, into about a 50/50 split between run and pass. He has completed about 68 percent of his passes for over 4,000 yards and 42 touchdowns with just seven interceptions the past two seasons. His arm strength jumps out when you watch his film. He throws almost better off-platform and a reason I think some colleges are noticing him is his arm strength while throwing on the run. Beal is a gamer who has played well in close games and at the Prep Redzone Showcase in January, he struggled early and powered through the whole event with a positive attitude. He has offers from Puget Sound, Tufts and Drake.
7. Will Burns, Trabuco Hills
I considered putting Burns higher on this list because I think he has more upside than almost any quarterback in the county. He is the best overall athlete on this list and is committed to Texas Tech for baseball and football. He had three games where he ran over 100 yards and had 9 touchdowns on the ground. As a passer he has a very good arm and has solid timing with his receivers. He could improve at reading coverages but that will improve with experience. Burns is at his best when the play breaks down and he scrambles and finds holes in opposing defenses after eight seconds. I saw him lead two huge game-winning and sealing drives against Tesoro and he was arguably the best player on the field. When I ask opposing coaches which quarterbacks impressed them last season, Burns is often mentioned by the coaches who played against Trabuco.
6. Justin Gil Justin Gil 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB La Habra | 2023 State CA , La Habra
Gil has really impressed me this offseason after watching him at two passing tournaments. He throws really well outside the numbers and puts some zip on the intermediate throws. His eyes are always on the secondary while under pressure and he has a good grasp of the offense. He knows when to take the deep shot and when to check down to his running back for an easy five yards. At the Prep Redzone Showcase in January he quickly became a verbal leader of the group and the receivers at the event enjoyed running routes for him. I’d like to see him be a little more consistent this year; there were some games where he played poorly last year and he will admit that. Gil has offers from Findlay University and Adams State.
