What I loved most about this prospect camp was how in-depth we were able to get while evaluating several off-the-radar prospects from all over the country, from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. This first series will focus mainly on the Dakotas prospects, but we also found a handful of other prospects from out of our territory that made some steady waves at the Beavers prospect camp. Take a look at Session I and see who balled out!

Colby was not the biggest offensive linemen I got to watch in Minot last Friday, but man, did he show some excellent skillsets. He showed a highly active punching ability which got started by his practical first step in which he showed excellent explosion out of his stance. The speed he landed on his punches was entertaining to watch, and based on my conversation with Colby, you can certainly tell he is a very high-character prospect coming out of Wyoming. Watching Colby on tape, you see a prospect that fires up out of his stance when it comes to his pull-blocking ability and has the great foot speed and pad-level to drive a bigger defensive lineman to the turf with just how momentous he is. He also shows a noticeable bend at the line that shows some keyed in athleticism. I like the odds of this young man playing football on Saturdays based on my in-person evaluation in Minot, as he’s a gritty offensive lineman that is very coachable as well. By far the most surprising linemen prospect I watched up in Minot last week with a lot of upside.
I got to watch Caden at our Prep Redzone Dakotas Showcase last winter and in Jamestown earlier this summer, and it was easy to see that this young man has made some strides in his game that I saw at the Minot prospect camp. Caden showed off some physical hands, and his ability to work those hands while attaining a strong pad-level paid divends for this kid when it came down to watching him in 1v1s. The physicality in those hands has certainly developed since my last viewing in Jamestown, as I thought he showed a stronger shedding ability from just a month earlier. The biggest development for Caden in my eyes is his technique. He is solid with those hands of his, but going up against some bigger competition on the offensive line, he showed strength he can grow on in the weight room this summer. Still no offers yet for this young man, but I am sure they are coming soon with the 2022 fall season approaching near.

Johnny was another prospect I got to watch in Jamestown and then at the Minot State Prospect Camp, and he really showed a lot of promise at the end of the Beavers camp. When you watch Johnny’s tape and in-person, you see a slippery runner that showed terrific balance when hugging the outside edge of the field, maintaining good footwork and balance. Johnny does an outstanding job as a freelancer in the Standing Rock offense, as he’s effective getting to the edge even off of first contact coming thru the backfield. In short yardage situations, Johnny shows good eyes as far as his reading ability on the inside gaps and with the power in his lower body, shows the defense that he’s not afraid of to fight for every yard he can get. Johnny is another prospect I believe will pick up more steam coming into the 2022 season as he has 1 NAIA offer right now.

Cade was by far the biggest stockriser I had rated at the Minot State prospect camp. This young man showed some athletic footwork in the early drills, and really turned the corner when we got into 1v1 reps with his very instinctive vision he showed off. Cade was a RB prospect I thought played MUCH bigger than his measurables might have shown, as he showed a much more developed lower body than what you can find from him on his junior tape. Prospects like Cade are why I love the prospect camp setting so much, as I felt I got a much better read on this young man when it comes to the next-level last Friday in Minot. He showed off to be very durable in pads, and showed lead steps that was sometimes one step ahead of the competitors he went up against. If I was a Midwest D2/NAIA program, I would be looking heavily at this young man going into the fall season as I would love to see Cade playing on Saturdays based on the stock rising skillsets I saw from him in Minot.
I have gotten the chance to scout Logan’s older brother and University of Mary commit Caleb Rist a ton over my last few years at Prep Redzone Dakotas, and let me just say that Logan in my eyes was another running back prospect that certainly rose his stock at the Minot State prospect camp last Friday. He showed some swift cutting ability with his footwork, as he was able to change directions very well in the reps I caught from Logan. Logan did a solid job with his reps in the open field, as he showed an elite burst that was easy to scan when the ball was in his court to make a play. Logan is not quite as big as Caleb (as of yet) but he has more durability and strength in that lower body of his that will develop soundly in the 2022 season. Cannot wait to see Logan’s junior tape after this season takes place, as I am a firm believer that Logan will stride from a watchlist prospect, much deeper into our 2024 rankings.
