It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Fairview Yellowjackets. After an unbeaten regular season but early playoff exit, the Yellowjackets want to go much further this fall.
Fairview Yellowjackets (A Preseason Ranking: #2)
The Fairview Yellowjackets have plenty to be excited about as they enter the 2021 football season. They bring back nearly all 22 starters from last year’s team and that was a squad that went unbeaten in the regular season and looked like one of the top teams in Class A. After going 10-0 in the regular season, the Yellowjackets would get tripped up in the second round and lost to Tonkawa by a field goal. Fast forward to this summer and it’s hard to argue that the Yellowjackets belong in the conversation among the state’s best in Class A. The only question becomes whether or not they’ll be able to get the job done in November and December.
This is a team that brings back nine starters on offense and nine starters on defense. The majority of their skill players return and this is an offense that was very productive a year ago and they have the chance to be even more productive this fall. We’re talking about the Yellowjackets being one of the top scoring teams in Class A. They are in a district that should not test them much. It didn’t test them last year as they dominated on their way to a district championship. So our expectations for Fairview are for them to go undefeated once again in the regular season. And as we stated above, the real season begins in November and the Yellowjackets hope that it will end in December in Edmond.

. He had a very productive junior year and is ready to take this team all the way to the championship this fall. Houk was limited on offense with just 26 catches but made the most of those receptions with nearly 500 yards and 8 touchdowns. On defense, he was one of the hardest hitters on the team with 13 sacks and he forced 6 fumbles on the season. He’s going to be an important two-way player for the Yellowjackets as they look to turn some heads this fall.

. Offensively, Perez will be a must watch at the running back position as he was an absolute work horse last year, finishing with 222 carries for over 1,500 yards and 26 touchdowns. On defense, he also added 5 sacks and 3 interceptions. But there’s no doubt that Perez was important on the offensive side of the ball and will allow the Yellowjackets to be incredibly balanced on offense. And this is an offense that could be one of the higher scoring units in Class A.

We had quite a few freshmen step into quarterback roles across the state and have immediate success. One of the small school standouts that fits that mold is Fairview’s

. He got to start last season as a freshman and was able to make plenty of plays with his arm. Bernard would finish the season by throwing for over 2,100 yards and 21 touchdowns. He’s looking to expand those numbers this fall and also help lead his team further into the playoffs. Bernard will have a chance to be one of the better Class A quarterbacks over the next few years.

. The junior wideout was having a good start to his sophomore season until a broken collarbone ended his season prematurely. The coaches at Fairview are not only excited to have Martens back this fall but they’re expecting big things. With the Yellowjackets returning just about everyone on offense, Martens will provide that big play spark in the passing game and allow them to be one of the more balanced and explosive offenses in the the state.

2022 Schedule/Game To Circle
Aug. 26 – Hobart
Sept. 2 – AT Chisholm
Sept. 9 – Alva
Sept. 23 – Hooker
– The district opener comes in week four as the Yellowjackets will host Hooker. This was the closest game Fairview had during their unbeaten regular season a year ago. However, Hooker was hit hard by graduation and they’ll have plenty of new faces on both sides of the ball. That will certainly help the Yellowjackets as they look to set the tone as the favorite in the district. They captured a district title a year ago and that’s a goal again this year but it’s not the only one. This is a team that is ready to compete in Class A and make a deep trip into the postseason once again.
Sept. 30 – AT Thomas
Oct. 7 – AT Sayre
Oct. 13 – Mooreland
Oct. 21 – AT Texhoma
Oct. 28 – Burns Flat
Nov. 4 – AT Merritt
Notable
Fairview’s 2021 season was one to remember even if it didn’t end the way they would like. The Yellowjackets went 11-1 and that’s an incredible turnaround from where they were the previous two seasons. After making it to the semifinals in the 2018 playoffs, the Yellowjackets would go 2-8 followed by a 3-8 season in 2020. Talk about a quick turnaround a season ago. The Yellowjackets would dominate their way thru the regular season and while they fell short in the playoffs, the turnaround the program has had is something impressive to see. Now, with 18 starters returning, the Yellowjackets have earned their spot among the best in Class A heading into the season.
