That would be Max Hough of GTRA and Max Fehr from West Bend-Mallard.
Last year, the two accounted for over 2,100 yards rushing and 36 touchdowns from the quarterback position. That’s just on the ground and not including their passing stats.
Here is a look at some of the key players to watch for this year:
Max Hough – GTRA – QB/LB
As a junior, Max Hough had some incredible games. That all led to him leading the district in rushing at 1,438 yards with 17 touchdowns. Hough isn’t the biggest player when he steps on the field, but he plays like it.
Along with showcasing his skills with his legs, Hough also completed 54 percent of his passes for 1,212 yards. He displayed excellent skills in protecting the football, throwing just two interceptions with 22 TDs.
With another year under his belt, Hough will be looked at as the top quarterback in the district – and on the short list for top QBs in eight-player.
Max Fehr – West Bend-Mallard – QB/LB
The history of West Bend-Mallard football includes some great performances. Max Fehr is looking to cement his status through his upcoming senior year on those very same lists.
Fehr is coming off a junior campaign in which he threw for 817 yards with nine touchdowns, while adding another 785 yards and district-leading 19 touchdowns on the ground.
More of a bulldozer out of the backfield, Fehr has no issue running over would-be defenders or past them.
Lucas Ahrenstorff – Harris-Lake Park – QB/S
Listed as a quarterback, Lucas Ahrenstorff made a name for himself as a sophomore at wide receiver last year. He led the district with 43 receptions, finishing with 459 yards and four touchdowns.
He is likely to form the top quarterback-wide receiver duo with Tyce Gunderson Tyce Gunderson 5'10" | 155 lbs | QB Harris-Lake Park | 2023 IA .
Tyce Gunderson Tyce Gunderson 5'10" | 155 lbs | QB Harris-Lake Park | 2023 IA – Harris-Lake Park – QB/LB
Which leads us right into Tyce Gunderson Tyce Gunderson 5'10" | 155 lbs | QB Harris-Lake Park | 2023 IA , the district leader in completions, attempts and passing yards last year. Gunderson threw for just under 1,500 with 17 touchdowns and just six interceptions on 211 attempts.
He isn’t the same running threat as Max Hough or Max Fehr, but he did finish with 225 yards and scored seven touchdowns last year.
Caleb Schaeffer Caleb Schaeffer 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR St. Edmond Ft. Dodge | 2023 IA – St. Edmond – QB/CB
It will be interesting to see how year two in eight-player goes for St. Edmond, as they return both players who saw the majority of time at quarterback. Senior-to-be Caleb Schaeffer Caleb Schaeffer 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR St. Edmond Ft. Dodge | 2023 IA threw for 884 yards and 13 touchdowns last year, but also saw time at running back after returning from injury.
He was second on the team with 202 yards, and could be featured there more this fall after the loss of Tyler Rossmanith.
Lamonte Sims – Northwood-Kensett – CB/QB
Teams that are scouting Northwood-Kensett need to be cautious of testing Lamonte Sims.
As a junior, Sims picked off a district-leading five passes. He finished with 34 tackles and could be used more on offense after his strong season as he was also a key special teams player returning punts and kickoffs.
