It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Coweta Tigers. The Tigers have been knocking on the door in Class 5A and they’re looking to kick it down this fall.
Coweta Tigers (5A Preseason Ranking: #5)
We mentioned how close Coweta has been over the last several years and they’re hoping that this season is the year for the Tigers to finally contend for a state championship. Last season, Coweta got off to a great start. They were 6-0 and rolling. Then they ran into McAlester and got absolutely blitzed at home. They would finish the season strong and make the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive season. They lost a close one on the road to Carl Albert. They’ll certainly have that in mind when they open up the season this fall at home against the Titans. The Tigers are using the losses they suffered last season as motivation coming into this year. This is a very talented Coweta team and they have the majority of their starters back. They’re once again in the top five of Class 5A but they’re not happy with that, they want to be at the top of Class 5A and they might have the firepower to do it.
Six starters return on offense, along with a new starter at quarterback that has been a starting quarterback in 6A-2 over the last several seasons. So let’s say the Tigers have seven starters back on offense. The Tigers also bring back eight starters on the defensive side of the ball and some of their best players from last year’s team have returned and are ready to make another run in Class 5A. The Tigers are in a tough district in Class 5A that features two other top ten teams and a few others that are borderline top ten teams. The non-district schedule is absolutely brutal and will show the Tigers exactly where they are before the enter district play. Head coach Tim Harper is excited about this year’s squad and believes they have what it takes to finally climb that Class 5A mountain.

. After starting for several seasons at Putnam City North, Laverty will be QB1 for the Tigers moving into this season. That was one of the bigger positions of need for Coweta this season after the graduation of three-year starter Gage Hamm. Laverty has put up significant numbers over the last several seasons. And as you’ll see below, Laverty is going to have some serious firepower at wide receiver so he should have a strong senior season.

. After watching the young junior throughout the offseason at 7v7 tournaments and showcase events, we have no doubts that Robinson is one of the top wide receivers in the state’s 2024 class. As a statewide prospect, Robinson is still somewhat of an unknown until he backs up the hype on Friday nights. We are confident that he’ll be one of those breakout stars this fall. the combination of size, speed and hands will make Robinson one of the top wideouts in Class 5A. Just remember where you heard that name first this fall.

to not have as much of a workload on the offensive side of the ball. Ford has been a star for the Tigers for several years now and he’s looking to end his high school career by leading the Tigers to the state championship. Ford is also one of the top cornerbacks in the state. We’ve written quite a bit about Ford over the last few seasons and he’s one of the top guys in Class 5A when it comes to players who can impact the game in all three phases. We expect Ford to have another strong season and have the Tigers in contention this fall.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 26 – Carl Albert
– It’s a top five showdown in Class 5A to kick off the season as Coweta will host Carl Albert in the season opener. The #5 Tigers will host #1 Carl Albert in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal round. The Tigers fell to Carl Albert 14-7 in a game that was close throughout. Coweta certainly believes that they let that one slip away and they’ll be determined to repay the favor by knocking off a Carl Albert team that is favored to win it all again in Class 5A. The Titans are loaded but the Tigers are as well. Both teams bring plenty of firepower into this game but if Coweta can get a win here, they’ll have a legitimate claim on being the top team in Class 5A.
Sept. 2 – AT Wagoner
– The Highway 51 rivalry has not been kind to Coweta over the last decade. It’s been a pretty one-sided rivalry with Wagoner dominating most of the last decade. The Tigers have been close to knocking off the Bulldogs at various times throughout the last ten years but last year they finally got the job done and got a big win over the Bulldogs. In fact, they didn’t just finally beat their rival, they beat them by 20+ points and dominated them. Despite the big win, it’s still going to be a huge game and it’s one of the best 5A/4A showdowns every single season. Both teams have high hopes for this season and a win here will give them momentum the rest of the way.
Sept. 16 – AT Pryor
Sept. 23 – Glenpool
Sept. 30 – AT Sapulpa
Oct. 7 – McAlester
– The storylines in this one write themselves as district foes Coweta and McAlester will square off in week six. Teams like Del City, Durant and Sapulpa will have something to say about this, but the district championship could be on the line when the Tigers host the Buffaloes. Last year, McAlester absolutely dominated the Tigers, nearly pitching a shutout. That was a game that McAlester took personally coming in after losing to Coweta in 2020. Fast forward to this year and you can bet that the Tigers will be taking it personally coming into this one. The winner here has to be considered the favorite for the district crown.
Oct. 13 – Durant
Oct. 20 – AT East Central
Oct. 28 – AT Del City
Nov. 4 – Memorial
Notable
We mentioned a few times now that Coweta has been knocking at the door in Class 5A and it’s time for the Tigers to kick that door down. The Tigers have made eight straight trips to the playoffs and once they’ve gotten there, they’ve been successful. However, they keep getting tripped up in the quarterfinal round and have fallen short of the final four. Coweta has made it to the quarterfinals in the last four seasons and have lost all four times and all four losses have come to different teams. Ardmore, Bishop McGuinness, Carl Albert and Piedmont have eliminated the Tigers over the last four seasons. Coweta will get their first test of the top westside teams when Carl Albert comes to town in late August.
