It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Booker T Washington Hornets. With Bixby moving up to 6A-1, the Hornets become one of the big favorites in 6A-2.
Booker T Washington Hornets (6A-2 Preseason Ranking: #2)
Booker T Washington comes into the season as one of the top teams in Class 6A-2. They’re considered one of the top teams every year but with Bixby moving up to 6A-1, that has opened the door for other programs, like the Hornets, to contend year after year. The Hornets came into last year as one of the top teams in 6A-2 and were tripped up twice in the regular season and then fell short in the playoffs after losing to Stillwater in the quarterfinals. The Hornets are reloaded for another run in 6A-2 this fall. They bring back 13 starters from last season and have a strong balance of returning starters on offense and defense.
The offense might be the strength of this year’s team as they have some serious firepower coming back in the passing game. Overall, they return seven starters on that side of the ball. The offensive line also will be a strength with several returning starters along the line of scrimmage. Then you can flip to the defensive side of the ball, where they return another six starters from last year’s team. While last year’s defense featured a secondary that was one of the best in the state, the front seven will be the strength of the defense this fall. The Hornets are in a tough district that features another top three team with Stillwater, but the Hornets will be ready to get back to contending for state championships.

– 2023 Linebacker
As you can see above, the Booker T Washington secondary took a pretty big hit to graduation this offseason as they had arguably the best secondary unit in the state last season. While they work in new faces in that area, the front seven will be a strength for the Hornets on defense this fall. Leading that front seven will be 2023 linebacker

. The Hornets have a few prospects to watch on the front seven but Walker has the chance to really have a big season after having a breakout year last year. Walker is a tough linebacker that is an absolute tackling machine. The Hornets and their rush defense will be ready.

It seems like every season, Booker T Washington has a player emerge as a breakout star on offense or defense. We’re not waiting for the season to start to call our shot, we’re doing it right here with Booker T Washington 2024 wide receiver

. We think that the 2024 receiver will have a breakout season and become a huge part of the Hornets and their passing attack this fall. Chalk will benefit from opponents putting a lot of attention of slowing down fellow receiver

and that will allow Chalk to work against defenders that won’t be able to stay in front of him. When November rolls around, remember where you heard this name first.

had a breakout season as a sophomore but he took his game to another level last year. The thing that always impressed us about Boone and his passing ability was just how accurate he was with the football. He tended to always make the right decision and rarely did anything that would hurt his team. Boone and the Hornet passing attack will be the strength of the offense as they work in new talent at the running back position. And as you can see with two of the other players to watch, Boone is going to have some very talented players around him at wide receiver.

had some fireworks before the sun went down as he announced his commitment to Arkansas. Tease has been one of the top players in the state over the last few seasons and he’s a top five prospect in the state’s 2023 class. While some schools are recruiting him as a defensive back, we think Tease is at his best on the offensive side of the ball as an absolute weapon at the wide receiver position. We mentioned how dangerous this passing attack can be for Booker T Washington and Tease is going to be the go-to target every time the Hornets step on the field.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 26 – AT Bentonville West, AR.
Sept. 2 – Del City
– These two programs have developed a nice East/West rivalry and the next chapter will be written as the Hornets welcome in Del City in week one. The Eagles are no longer a threat in 6A-2 as they’re moving down to Class 5A this fall. But just like the last several years when these two take the field, this will be a game that features several players on both sides of the ball that will end up playing D1 football and several other levels of college ball overall. The Eagles will provide the Hornet offense with a good test early on as they have a tough defense to contend with Booker T Washington’s passing attack.
Sept. 10 – AT McLain
Sept. 23 – AT Bartlesville
Sept. 30 – Stillwater
– Booker T Washington will play host to Stillwater in week five and the second district game of the season and this one might very well decide who the district champion will be this fall. Booker T Washington and Stillwater are the top two ranked teams in the east side district of 6A-2 as we head into the season. The Hornets will be ready for this week five clash as well. In addition to needing a win to get into the driver’s seat towards a district crown, the Pioneers ended Booker T Washington’s season a year ago in the quarterfinal round. With Stillwater now a district foe, you don’t need many other reasons to get up for this one.
Oct. 7 – Tahlequah
Oct. 13 – AT US Grant
Oct. 21 – Muskogee
– While Stillwater might be the top threat to Booker T Washington this year, Muskogee is not only a threat this season but they’ll be a huge threat to the Hornets moving forward. We’ve made no secret about how much we like Muskogee going into this season with all the experienced and young talent they bring back. This year might be too early for the Roughers to truly contend in 6A-2 but they’re going to surprise quite a few people this fall. If the Hornets aren’t ready for this week eight clash, they could get tripped up and would be put in a position where they have to fight and claw for a home playoff game.
Oct 28 – Sand Springs
Nov. 4 – AT Putnam City West
Notable
So it’s well known at this point that Bixby dominated 6A-2 since it’s inception. They won seven championships in eight years from 2014-2021. That one year that they didn’t win it all, they lost to Booker T Washington in the 2017 title game. It’s been a few years since that championship victory but the Hornets are ready to take back the crown in 6A-2. The Hornets are in the tougher district in 6A-2 but they still are one of the favorites to contend for the state championship. If they can stay healthy, the Hornets will be in the mix in November and December with all the talented players they have returning going into this season.
