Since there’s no major city in the area, players in South Georgia can often get overlooked. There are plenty of wide receivers in the area who deserve recognition heading into the 2022 season, and Prep Redzone has the details
Colin Smith – SE Bulloch
A two-sport star playing his first season this fall at wide receiver, Smith has excellent size at 6-foot-6 195-pounds who knows how to get up and snatch the football. His time playing basketball should translate well to the gridiron as he’s a tough competitor and knows how to use his size to his advantage. He’s used to jumping up for rebounds, and this fall he’ll be winning plenty of 50/50 balls over smaller defenders. He’s had a great spring and summer perfecting his craft and he has a chance to be a true breakout receiver in the Savannah area. He’s tough, has natural athleticism, and a few schools like Troy, Mercer, Lehigh, and other academically strong schools have started to show interest. He’s also incredibly smart and should perfect the playbook by the time the season starts.
Andrico Jackson – Monroe
Another two-sport star who can make plays on both offense and defense, Jackson is an impressive athlete with explosiveness with the ball in his hands. He runs well and shows strong hands when catching the ball towards the ground. He’s a big-play threat who caught three passes in the spring game and took them all back for touchdowns. He’s an impressive defensive back as well with good size at 6-foot-1 180-pounds, but he’s expected to have a giant season at receiver this year. He’s one of the more productive two-way players in the Albany area and has a chance to have a real breakout season this fall. As a junior last year, Jackson caught 18 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns, but those numbers are expected to increase this year as a senior. He’s getting more attention at DB, but I think he’s a better receiver. Look for this big-time basketball player to shine on the gridiron this upcoming season.
Tyler Floyd – Thomas County Central
One of the top overall slot receivers in South Georgia, Floyd is an excellent offensive weapon with speed and versatility. He can line up in multiple positions on offense, but knows how to make a play whenever the ball is in his hands. He’s quick, shifty, and knows how to elude defenders down the field. He’s a good route runner, he can change directions well, and shows great burst when given a little space to run. If he continue to develop his craft and ends the summer on a strong note, many feel Floyd could make a run at the school receiving and touchdown record this fall. His versatility, speed, and overall potential could make that happen. The 5-foot-10 170-pounder could be one of the most productive receivers in the area this fall if everything goes according to plan.
Ronnie Davis – Lowndes
Another promising slot receiver with breakout potential, Davis is quick, twitchy, and shows reliable hands. The Vikings are losing multiple receivers from last year, so Davis is in line to have a breakout season this fall. He didn’t see a ton of passes last year, making only 11 catches, but it wasn’t due to lack of talent. Lowndes is looking for receivers to step up this year, so Davis has a chance to catch lots of passes each week. He’s tough, knows how to block, and could be one of the leading receivers in an incredibly talented 7A region in South Georgia this fall.
