To do so, the Centurions will have to replace a ton of offensive output, as they lost one of the state’s most dynamic quarterbacks and a power running back. Coach Lynn Fleming thinks he has some guys who are ready to step up.
“Our quarterback, Kamajay Brackett-Brannon, played JV for us and he’s really gotten better over the summer,” Fleming said. “He’s a different guy, he’s really athletic and can do a bunch of different things in that aspect, and our staff has done a heck of a job to adjust the offense to fit him. He’ll just be a junior, so we’re excited to see what he can do the next two years.”
There’s also a change of style at running back for Broome.
“Darren Crook actually started there for us last year, and had a lot of carries before he broke his hand,” Fleming said. “He’s also a junior, and he’s back for us. Last year, Jamir (Dewberry) was a straight-ahead guy, and Darren is a little more shifty. He’s very strong, and he’ll be a load to try to bring down.”
Fleming also has high hopes for freshman RB Jaylen McGill.
“He’s a big, strong kid and if he improves like we think he will, he’ll be getting a lot of interest as his career progresses,” he said.
Up front, Steven O’Dell will lead the offensive line.
“Steven has been on a tour of camps this summer,” Fleming said. “He’s been just about everywhere, and college coaches love him. He certainly does a good job for us. He’s about 6-6, 285, and he’s just a special player.”
Returning seniors Paul Lee and Jackson Fowler will join O’Dell on the line, along with junior DT Thompson.
At receiver, the Centurions had a bunch of players catch a bunch of balls last year. That by-committee approach will continue. Carlos Cohen will play in the slot, with Zyon Wilkins out wide. They’ll be joined by Isaiah Brown, Grayson Bradley, Landon Deaton, and Matthew Hall, among others.
Defensively, Broome returns a force in the middle of the field in Noah Quinn.
“Noah is our middle linebacker, and he had a ton of tackles for us last year,” Fleming said. “He averaged 16 or 17 a game. He hurt his shoulder in Week 8, and we lost a close one with Woodruff, lost a close one with Chapman, and lost by one point in the playoffs after that. He’s just a very good MLB and a huge difference-maker for us.”
Garrett Sontag will also contribute at LB, and Lance Fowler, Michael Withrow, and Aubrey Hemphill will lead a group of young players up front. In the secondary, Preston Thrift, Amajai Martin, and John Wilkins will join Bradley and Crook.
