Oftentimes, these kinds of DB’s tend to be some of the most successful throughout the high school level of play, and go on to play at the Power 5 level. Some of these successful DB’s can be viewed to be termed as Ball Hawks, as they can easily swarm to the football, and create turnovers at the flip of a hat. Going into next season, be on the lookout for some of the players below, as we believe they will find a way to come away with their fair share of turnovers.
Jacori Mcgee- Campbell
Impressively, Mcgee created an immense amount of pressure on opposing QB’s throughout the entirety of last year due to his ability to cover receivers with ease. Throughout the season, not only did he pressure bad throws, but he caused QB’s to look the other way, in fear of throwing an interception. Regardless, this is what Mcgee caused, as he totaled 7 interceptions by the end of the season, while also shutting down plenty of receivers along the way. He not only gets out of his breaks well, but he uses his speed, and burst to consistently be in position based upon the coverage in which his defense is in. Next season, look for Mcgee to continue to play with a ball hawk attitude, and to create effortless turnovers.
Saveon Cason- Brooks County
Within a 12 game span, Cason’s ability to play the CB position was on full display, as he not only had to match up with the best receivers in his region, but he had to do so with an ability to shadow movement, and limit receptions, and yardage. By the end of the year, he proved to have decent footwork, and a solid bend, and burst out of his stance. Cason also used his hands, length, and speed to his ability, causing him to be in position to create turnovers- in which he capitalized on plenty of times. As a result, Cason totaled 7 picks last year, and will look to add to this total next season.
Colton Hood Colton Hood 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Eagles Landing | 2023 State GA – Eagles Landing
Colton Hood Colton Hood 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Eagles Landing | 2023 State GA is another prospect who we consider a ball hawk, as he used his pure athleticism from the DB position to put himself in place to create turnovers multiple times when the ball was in the air in his general location. Hood totaled around 26 yards from the 7 interceptions he caused throughout the year, and was always in place to force bad throws, or cause the opposing passer to look the other direction. Hood could use plenty of development in his overall ability to get out of his breaks with little wasted movement, but his quick feet, and an ability to react naturally to the game at hand is certainly there.
Billy Lewis- Oconee County
Lewis, just like each of the players that came before him on this list, also totaled around 7 interceptions last season. From the safety position, he played with an understanding of the overall flow of the game, while also being able to use his speed, and overall athleticism to get to the ball in time to make plays. At times, he played with wasted movement, but despite being raw, he still had the burst, and hustle to get to the football that you would like to see out of a DB. As a result of this, he played with good leverage in coverage, and decent footwork, and an ability to change direction, and get out of his breaks.
