This past weekend we were able to witness some outstanding play for the skill positions in the 7v7 State Tournament. Saturday for the Championship and Consolation brackets, we got to preview teams and get a little taste of what they have in store for the upcoming season. With so many games going on at once we could not get eyes on all of them, but this is a takeaway from what we saw at our time there!
[player_tooltip player_id="131857" first="Tripp" last="Riordan"] (2023) is and will continue to be a problem for defenses.
The Wakeland tight end was one of the best out there Saturday morning. He looked all of 6’6" 240 and played like a bully. He used his body to shield defenders away from the ball and his catch radius was quarterback Brennan Myer’s best friend. Riordan displayed incredibly strong hands and played a big part in helping Wakeland win the Consolation bracket. I’m excited to see what he brings for the season.
Cinco Ranch’s [player_tooltip player_id="226441" first="Gavin" last="Rutherford"], Noah Abboud and the Cougar offense have something brewing for next season.
The Cougars were runner-up in the consolation bracket and showed some serious resiliency and poise throughout the morning. Quarterback Rutherford (2023) was diming up his targets and Abboud (2023) seemed to be in the endzone all morning. Abboud found the open gaps in coverage and made some outstanding catches. He showed some clean route running and confident hands.
Katy Jordan Warriors will surprise many teams when the season rolls around.
The Warriors are loaded with talent at the skill positions. Receivers [player_tooltip player_id="321388" first="Nathan" last="Salz"] (2023), Deacon Stanfield (2024), Zechariah Sample (2024), and [player_tooltip player_id="231286" first="Andrew" last="Marsh"] (2025) all showed out and caused issues for the opposing defenses. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="266450" first="Colin" last="Willetts"] (2024) had a very good showing, placing the ball where it needed to be and allowing his receivers to use their skill and work. If you haven’t heard it yet you’re hearing it now, The Warriors are on the come up and have the players to take care of business.
Lake Travis’s [player_tooltip player_id="121941" first="Bo" last="Edmundson"] is a cool competitor with top accuracy.
Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="121941" first="Bo" last="Edmundson"] (2023) showed some good stuff Saturday morning. When he is on, he is on. Squaring up, showing very good footwork, and deceptive with the pumps and shoulder fakes. Edmundson was fitting throws into crazy windows and catching the defenses off guard with his throws. He plays in control, taking what the defense gave him and had steady drives that led to scores for the offense. Seeing his growth from last season will be something to look for.
