Saturday in the Midlands turned out to be pretty good day trip for the Byrnes football team.
The Rebels competed with 16 other schools in the Justin Bethel 7-on-7 at Blythewood High School and came away with the $3,000 check for claiming first place over Spring Valley. Bethel is a former Blythewood standout that currently plays with the New England Patriots.
With the heat soaring in the afternoon single-game elimination portion of the tournament, the Rebels proved to be the deepest and most versatile attack.
Senior quarterback Colby Shaw engineered and offensive attack that helped put 32 points on the board in a semifinal win over Gray Collegiate then a 25-point effort over the Vikings in the final. Shaw threw a couple of deep passes that connected for long gains, mostly to Qmazia Watson, but the son of coach Reggie Shaw also took what the defense was giving him. The wheel route hitting the underneath receivers and the running backs in the flats were Shaw’s favorite targets.
Junior wide receiver Ethan Morris and junior tight end [player_tooltip player_id="267452" first="Kade" last="Caton"], a 6’6”, 225-pound target, also had big afternoons for the Rebels.
Defensively, Byrnes has a dynamic leader at linebacker in senior [player_tooltip player_id="204428" first="Miquel" last="Dingle"]. Dingle is the son of former NFL player Mike Dingle and is coming off a track season in which he won the Class 5A 110m hurdles. Dingle is vocal and has a high motor, which is always full speed. Dingle had a recruiting visit to Charlotte earlier in the week and is scheduled to go to Texas Tech in the coming week.
Senior defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="262636" first="Kyai" last="Cook"] also had a solid showing, intercepting a pass in the end zone to halt one of the Spring Valley possessions.
Spring Valley made a run to the championship after going 2-3 in pool play. The Vikings were without their potential starting quarterback but defeated Dorman, Lower Richland and Chester to reach the finals.
One of the biggest highlights for the Vikings came from the play of 6’5” senior wide receiver Kendall Williams. This is the first year out for football for Williams, but he’s been a standout for Spring Valley in basketball. He had several scoring catches on the afternoon.
Running back KJ Jefferson has stood out on the offensive side of things.
Defensively, senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="146359" first="Evan" last="Javis"] had a couple of interceptions on the afternoon. Senior defensive backs [player_tooltip player_id="146358" first="Zion" last="Fuller"] and [player_tooltip player_id="202745" first="Jordan" last="Chestnut"] and junior [player_tooltip player_id="267471" first="Devan" last="Crumpton"] all had a solid afternoon.
