It’s been a while since a prospect from Albuquerque was offered by a Power 5 school but that dry spell came to screeching halt Wednesday night when 2024 Cleveland LB [player_tooltip player_id="274701" first="Stratton" last="Shufelt"], arguably the state’s top player regardless of class, was offered by Colorado following the Buffaloes’ camp in Boulder.
Overall, Shufelt is the second NM player to be offered by a Power 5 school this year. 2023 Carlsbad DE [player_tooltip player_id="138040" first="Tylen" last="Gonzalez"] quietly committed to Arizona a few weeks ago.
"When we got finished with the camp, the linebacker coach told me he wanted to see me in his office," Shufelt told Prep Redzone New Mexico. "Right before heading into his office, the head coach stopped me and told me they are going to offer me. I’m still taking it all in."
In addition to the camp, Shufelt toured Colorado’s facilities and met several of the CU coaches. He was impressed.
"The coaching staff was amazing as well as the facilities and the school," Shufelt said.
Two Cleveland teammates joined Shufelt in Boulder for the Colorado camp: RB [player_tooltip player_id="138204" first="Josh" last="Perry"] and RB/LB [player_tooltip player_id="275565" first="Isaac" last="Medrano"]. Shufelt hopes his recruiting process benefits all NM prospects.
"My main goal is to get New Mexico and its athletes the attention they deserve," Shufelt said.
The Buffaloes mark Shufelt’s seventh offer. Earlier, he was offered by New Mexico, New Mexico State, UTEP, UConn, Sam Houston State and Idaho State.
Shufelt plans to camp at Baylor this weekend (June 18) followed by Ohio State (June 21) and Virginia Tech (June 26) next week.
