Being a multi-sport athlete has taken on a much different role in recent years.
For these three, though, it meant securing strong finishes in the spring at the state track and field meet in field events while preparing for their upcoming senior seasons on the gridiron.
In both the Class 4A high jump and long jump, soon-to-be senior football players shined bright.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] - Ankeny - WR/S - 6-1 - 195</strong>
Competing for his new school, Ankeny, former Des Moines Roosevelt all-stater [player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] had a nice spring. Patton placed fourth in the 4A high jump, clearing 6-foot-6.
Patton transferred to Ankeny after the recent basketball season and will pair with J.J. Kohl to form one of the top duos in the state. Patton is fielding Div. I offers from several schools, and even took a visit to UCLA this spring.
Last year at Roosevelt, he played quarterback, throwing for almost 1,300 yards while running for another 548 with 21 combined touchdowns.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="246742" first="Jacob" last="Kieler"] - Cedar Falls - RB - 6-0 - 165</strong>
Be on the lookout this fall for a rising prospect in [player_tooltip player_id="246742" first="Jacob" last="Kieler"]. This spring, Kieler earned silver in the 4A high jump, clearing 6-foot-8. The running back will take that to the football field this coming fall in hopes of displaying his skills for college coaches.
Kieler, who stands 6-foot and checks in at 165 pounds, ran for a team-high 596 yards with five touchdowns last year. He also caught four passes for 52 yards and another score.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="246740" first="Abu" last="Sama"] - Southeast Polk - RB/DB - 5-11 - 185</strong>
For the past three years, [player_tooltip player_id="246740" first="Abu" last="Sama"] has been one of the top long jumpers in the state. He once again showed why inside Drake Stadium this past spring, leaping a state-record 24-02.75 to claim the 4A title.
Sama was the leading rusher for the Rams, racking up 931 yards with 12 touchdowns. Titus Christiansen has graduated, meaning you can expect even more from Sama in the ground attack this fall.
