Eight Orange County public schools competed at Corona del Mar High last Friday for the inaugural Battle at the Bay passing league tournament.
Corona del Mar beat Cypress in the championship game and scored on every possession throughout the tournament.
Disclaimer: I did not get a chance to watch every team closely at the tournament. I go to see each team play, but only got to watch San Clemente and Foothill play briefly.
Here are the defensive players that stood out to me on Friday:
[player_tooltip player_id="173344" first="Trevor" last="Monteleone"], Cypress
Monteleone was the best two-way player at the event and will be on the offensive performers list as well. He’s big and physical and has excellent ball skills. He had a big interception against La Habra which helped Cypress win the game. Monteleone was an All-County player last season and with the amount of field he covers, likely will be again this season.

Gabriel Madel, La Habra
Madel is a linebacker who is even better when the pads come on. He led La Habra with 86 tackles last season and added eight tackles for a loss, a sack, an interception, two forced fumbles and five pass deflections. A lot of teams tried running short crossing routes against La Habra and Madel was always there to shut it down. He is an All-County caliber player who could post 100 tackles this season.
Thomas Telesco, Corona del Mar
Telesco got some playing time as a sophomore last season at safety and has improved greatly this offseason. Coach Dan O’Shea said that Telesco was the best defensive back for the Sea Kings on Friday and may have been the best at the entire event.
Jack Brundage, Tesoro
Brundage had 64 tackles, four for a loss, one sack and an interception at linebacker for Tesoro as a junior last season. He is a 4.6 GPA guy who is on the smaller side but a guy that coaches love to have on their team. A Tesoro coach told me he may be the team’s best defensive player on and off the field.
[player_tooltip player_id="168733" first="Brad" last="Gerken"], San Clemente
San Clemente was missing some linebackers who were at other camps, but the team’s reliable safety Gerken was playing and stopping anything over the middle. He times his deflections very well and breaks up passes without drawing flags. When the pads come on, he can come up into the box and stop the run as well as cover slot guys in man coverage.

Blaize Bolter, Dana Hills
Bolter is a safety who has bulked up a bit since last season. Dana Hills is a young and inexperienced team who had some struggles Friday, but Bolter is an experienced defensive back who can potentially be the quarterback of the defense and help guys adjust to the varsity level. He also was the second strongest player on the team in the weight room this offseason.
