Happy Father’s day all! Hopefully you have a great day with family and find time to reach out to all the different father’s (Or mother’s who played both roles) out there in your life and give them a genuine thank you for the impact they have had on you. Enjoy this week’s edition of Best Thing on Film- Defensive Line! [player_tooltip player_id="188150" first="Hayden" last="Bills"]- (Rosemount High School) 6’4 245 Lbs. C/o 2023. @bills_hayden Hayden has the length, strength and mentality to be an outstanding strongside defensive end in a four down front. His film has him both at Dline as well as Tight end and sometimes in the backfield and you can see his skillset gives him the ability to wear many different hats. He does a nice job utilizing his length and is very physical. There are times when he needs to trust his instincts and trigger faster but I see that happening this year with experience as a senior. Best Thing on Film- at the 1:41 mark the offense is running a gap scheme and he is facing a base block, he presses and discards the man on him and shows some nice small area quickness to track down the back for no gain. [player_tooltip player_id="295812" first="Daniel" last="Yogei"]- (Elk River High School) 5’9 215 Lbs. C/o 2023. @danielyogei131 At 5’9 Daniel certainly doesn’t have what most would consider prototypical size but his game is fun to watch. His skill set is built on quickness and effort and you can absolutely win with those characteristics. Despite being a little smaller he does a great job holding the point of attack with his strength and understanding of how to use his hands. Best Thing on Film- the first play on the highlight film shows you all of the above mentioned skills. You see his quickness and ball get off as he breaks through the line, you get to see him change direction as the quarterback begins to scramble, and you get to see his effort as he gives chase and makes the tackle near the sideline. Ian Oberfeld- (Pierz Healy High School) 6’2 270 Lbs. C/o 2023. @IanOberfeld Ian is a big strong interior defensive lineman who can hold the point of attack vs. the run game and shows enough quickness to be a factor in the pass rush as well. There are a lot of good clips which also show his motor and that is a must at this position if you want to play with consistency you have to be able to chase down plays with effort as they won’t always come to you. He can improve in the use of his hands when defeating blocks as right now he mostly uses his size and strength advantages to win. Best Thing on Film- there are a number of good hustle plays but the rep at 52 seconds he wins at the line of scrimmage, goes through the quarterback as he pitches and finishes on the running back just as he is trying to execute a halfback pass. This forces a bad throw and interception for his team which is always a huge play. [player_tooltip player_id="186076" first="Alex" last="Baccoli"]- (Eastview High School) 6’0 230 Lbs. C/o 2023. @AlexBaccoli Alex certainly could end up on someone’s squad as an offensive lineman and most of his highlights are on that side of the ball. However, he does a very nice job from the nose position for Eastview’s defense as well. He is stout against the run, can hold the point and does a nice job using his hands to defeat blocks. He plays with a solid base and with his understanding of the other side of the ball does a nice job reading and making plays. Best Thing on Film- showing knowledge of the other side of the ball at the 4:07 mark he recognizes screen immediately and stops his rush, forcing the QB to make a bad throw right to him and returning it for about 40 yards. We are able to see his understanding of what the offense is trying to do as well as get a decent look at his wheels, he runs pretty well for a big man. [player_tooltip player_id="19007" first="Logan" last="Hoppe"]- (Hutchinson High School) 6’4 250 Lbs. C/o 2023. @LoganHoppe55 Watching Logan you see a young man who excels most as a run stuffing interior lineman. He excels playing the 3 technique which often requires taking on double teams on almost every play and his size strength and hand usage makes him ideal for the task. Assuming he is still growing he could possibly be a nose tackle at the next level as well if he stays in the defensive side of the ball. He can improve at times with his pad level, but has a nice feel for the technique of holding the point and not allowing movement verses combo blocks. Best Thing on Film- case in point at the 1:15 mark he uses his hands well to defeat the outside man on the double team, splits it and makes a tackle for no gain against a zone scheme.
