Welcome to Week 2 of the 2022 Statewide Players To Watch!
Over the next several weeks, we’ll be taking a look at players you should keep your eye on as we head into the upcoming 2022 season in August. If you missed last week’s report, read it here.
This week, we’re taking a look at two quarterbacks who thrive making plays on the run, an impressive two-way player and a defensive back who is solid in run support and has quick reaction speed. Let’s jump in!
2024 Johnsonville QB Malik Shippy (pictured above)
Twitter: @MalikShippy_10
Analysis – Shippy impressed us with his ability to make throws under pressure when watching his film. According to the data from the Palmetto Combine Series back in April, he checked in at 6’1, 167 pounds and his size makes the difference when being able to elude the first tackle and make plays in space. You have to be concerned with his ability to run the football and that’s when he is effective in the play action passing game. There were several clips on his film where he threw it right up the seam for a long completion.

2024 Crestwood QB Javion Martin
Twitter: @JavionMartin11
Analysis – Martin is a guy who you may not know a lot about, but you will soon. He was at NC State’s camp a few weeks ago and his interest should continue to rise with the season on the horizon. Martin’s pocket presence is the first thing that stands out when you turn on the tape. He steps into all his throws and he puts solid velocity on all his throws, meaning his receivers can catch it right in stride and keep running. He picks his way through tackles on the zone read and is not afraid to take a hit.

2024 Southside Christian DB Ethan Chandler
Twitter: @EthanChandler05
Analysis – Chandler’s primary position is defensive back and he is another one of those defensive backs who can not only play well out in coverage, but he can also stop the run well. This is especially true on flare passes to the back. His ability to quickly diagnose the play and stop the run is impressive – the runner is not able to get out of the backfield. Chandler also lined up at running back some on his 2021 film and he exploded through the hole for a huge gain and he can also catch the ball out of the backfield and accelerate quickly for a score.

2024 North Augusta DB Noah Wyatt
Twitter: @NoahW217
Analysis – The first thing that stands out about Wyatt when you turn on the tape is his size. He plays like a safety, but looks like a linebacker. He is not afraid to come up and make hits in the hole against the run, which is why he is effective in run support. When it comes to defending passing plays, he reads the eyes of the quarterback well and can drift to the spot where the ball is going to go and make the interception.
