We unveiled new lists for the Class of 2023, 2024 and 2025. There was movement galore and new additions that no one else is talking about just yet. We pride ourselves in finding the diamonds in the rough, after all.
But what we also noticed along the way were several themes that carry across the classifications and tell us about the bigger picture of high school football in the Palmetto State.
TRANSFERS FINDING NEW PATHS
Players change schools. It’s just a fact.
One of the state’s most recent transfers – incoming Greenville defensive lineman Jayden Wilson-Abrams Jayden Wilson-Abrams 6'3" | 270 lbs | DL Greenville | 2024 State SC (pictured) – is only the microcosm of the state of the game. Whether it’s due to parents’ moves or better academic and athletic opportunities, schools swaps are on the rise.
One of Wilson-Abrams’ newest teammates is also going to be in his first year at Greenville. Christian Henderson Christian Henderson 5'8" | 160 lbs | DB Greenville | 2025 State SC makes the short jump from Southside Christian after helping the Sabres to another Class 1A title.
Normal Class 5A upstate contender Byrnes was also the recipient of two transfers, quarterback Chamarryus Bomar Chamarryus Bomar 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Westside | 2025 State SC and defensive back Armoni Weaver Armoni Weaver 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Westside | 2025 State SC . If that wasn’t enough, two of the state’s most productive tailbacks, Davian Brown Davian Brown 5'7" | 190 lbs | RB Fort Dorchester | 2024 State SC and Traevon Dunbar Traevon Dunbar 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Midland Valley | 2024 State SC , are making moves to Fort Dorchester and Midland Valley, respectively.
NOT JUST BIG, MASSIVE
South Carolina is going through a wave of absolute beasts on its offensive lines. That goes for the Class of 2023 via the likes of 6-foot-7, 285-pound Monroe Freeling Monroe Freeling 6'7" | 285 lbs | OL Oceanside Collegiate Academy | 2023 State SC (Oceanside Collegiate), 6-foot-5, 280-pound Markee Anderson Markee Anderson 6'5" | 280 lbs | OL Dorman | 2023 State SC (Dorman), recent Northwestern University commit Jordan Knox Jordan Knox 6'4" | 295 lbs | OL Northwestern | 2023 State SC (6-foot-4, 295), who coincidentally attends Rock Hill’s Northwestern High, and Summerville’s Drew Inabinet Drew Inabinet 6'5" | 325 lbs | OL Summerville | 2023 State SC (6-foot-5, 325).
This is by no means a one-class rush.
The Class of 2024 is comprised of 6-foot-7, 305-pound Kam Pringle Kam Pringle 6'7" | 305 lbs | OL Woodland | 2024 State SC of Woodland, Dillon’s Josiah Thompson Josiah Thompson 6'7" | 290 lbs | OL Dillon | 2024 State SC (6-foot-6, 290 pounds), and Hartsville’s Slayton Stokes Slayton Stokes 6'5" | 325 lbs | OL Hartsville | 2024 State SC (6-foot-5, 300 pounds).
Maybe the biggest of the bunch by the time it’s said and done will be 2024 Ashley Ridge lineman Bryce Lawhon Bryce Lawhon 6'6" | 350 lbs | OL Ashley Ridge | 2025 State SC , who before the end of his freshman year of high school stood an impressive 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds.
LAST BY NOT LEAST, THE QUARTERBACKS
Two years ago, one of the state’s better known quarterback trainers, Ramon Robinson, told us to be on the lookout for a groundswell of signal callers. It’s hard to deny Robinson at least a little bit of prophetic credit.
Take the Class of 2024, for instance. Three of our top players in the class – Wren’s Gavin Owens Gavin Owens 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Rabun Gap | 2025 State GA , Richland Northeast’s Will Wilson Will Wilson 6'1" | 220 lbs | QB Richland Northeast | 2025 State SC and Chesterfield’s Kaegan Chambers Kaegan Chambers 6'2" | 170 lbs | QB Chesterfield | 2025 NC – are all quarterbacks. There’s also Westside’s Cutter Woods Cutter Woods 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Westside | 2025 State SC (who recently transferred from Eastside, by the way), and Chapin’s Brady Albro Brady Albro 5'10" | 190 lbs | QB Chapin | 2025 State SC , who all of a sudden finds himself as QB1 after his predecessor transferred to IMG Academy.
Among the rising juniors, Braxton Scott Braxton Scott 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB James Island Charter | 2024 State SC at James Island, Rock Hill’s Matthew Wilson Matthew Wilson 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Rock Hill | 2024 State SC and Conway’s Devin Grainger Devin Grainger 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Conway | 2024 State SC are currently anchoring a class that also contains a possible breakout star in Terrance Smith of South Aiken.
The Class of 2023? Well, that one is just plain good. From Zolten Osborne Zolten Osborne 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Fort Dorchester | 2023 State SC (Fort Dorchester) to Raheim Jeter Raheim Jeter 6'3" | 220 lbs | QB Spartanburg | 2023 State SC (Spartanburg) to Grayson Loftis Grayson Loftis 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Gaffney | 2023 State SC (Gaffney) to LaNorris Sellers LaNorris Sellers 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB South Florence | 2023 State SC (South Florence), it’s easy to see why the recruiting trail has picked up for some of the state’s younger quarterbacks.
