New players emerged in the latest update, and we are happy to rank a number of different “under the radar” defensive backs in Middle Georgia. Here are some new Middle Georgia defensive back additions to the latest 2023 Prep Redzone Georgia Rankings.
Shelton Lewis Shelton Lewis 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Stockbridge | 2023 State GA – Stockbridge
Coming in at No. 149 is Shelton Lewis Shelton Lewis 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Stockbridge | 2023 State GA , a versatile defensive back with big-time ball skills who knows how to bait a QB into throwing his way. The 5-foot-11 170-pounder does a great job of roaming the back end and can close really well on a receiver when the ball is in the air. He has great speed and knows how to sink his hips and run with receivers. He controls the middle of the field in coverage and has enough length to make plays against bigger, longer receivers. He has great safety instincts against the pass. Lewis can also be physical and knows how to separate receivers from the ball. He can be an intimidating defender in the middle of the field and knows how to lay a pop on the ball carrier when he needs too. He’s young, but has a lot of potential to have a breakout junior season this fall.
Javion Clark Javion Clark 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB Jones County | 2023 State GA – Jones County
Coming in at No. 200 in the Georgia state rankings is the hard-hitting safety out of Jones County. At 6-foot-2 175-pounds, Clark is a tough defender with size who is coming off a big sophomore season. He’s a rangy defender who can really come down and set the tone against the run. He’s a powerful hitter and leaves a bruise when he hits the defenders. He’s also reliable when the ball is in the air as he tracks it down well and doesn’t let defenders get behind him on a consistent basis. He’s coming off a tough junior season due to injury, but as a sophomore in 2020, Clark showed his D1 talent, making 85 tackles, 8 PBUs, and one INT. He’s healthy and looking forward to a giant senior season in 2022. He’s earned the right to be ranked, and we believe he’s one of the top 2023 safety prospects in Middle Georgia.
Camerin Marshall – Perry
One of Middle Georgia’s more underrated safety prospects and the No. 224 overall prospect in Georgia, Marshall is a tackling machine and proved to be a standout run defender form the secondary over the last two seasons. As a sophomore, Marshall racked up 145 total tackles, leading the 4A classification. As a junior last fall, Marshall made 74 tackles and two INTs. He has an outstanding frame at 6-foot-2 180-pounds, and he’s more than just a sure tackler. He makes a lot of plays with the ball in the air and does a great job of reading the quarterbacks eyes. He reacts quickly and can cover a lot of ground with his long arms and overall frame. He shows good ball skills and has an overall knack for making plays. He was easily one of the top defenders in the region and his play last season as a junior earned him a spot in the Prep Redzone Rankings. He holds a handful of offers from Georgia Southern, Georgia State, and Virginia Tech.
Clinton Jackson Clinton Jackson 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB Schley County | 2023 State GA – Schley County
At No.133 in our rankings is a productive safety from small-town Ellaville. A fluid athlete who can make plays as both a receiver and a defensive back, Jackson shows great ball skills and reliable hands with the ball in the air. He may not have lit up the stat sheet defensively, mainly because he played both ways and opposing QBs feared throwing his way, but he still ended the season with 53 tackles and two INTs. He has plenty of size and length at 6-foot-2 175-pounds, so he’ll bring D1 length and athleticism to wherever he ends up. He closes on the ball in coverage, appears to be fundamentally sound, read the QB well, and again, knows how to make a play on the ball. He’s also a stout run defender who can come down into the box to help clog running lanes. His recruitment is starting to heat up, and he’s ranked as one of the top safety prospects currently in Middle Georgia.
