New players emerged in the latest update, and we are happy to rank a number of different “under the radar” quarterbacks in the Atlanta and metro area. Here are some new Atlanta-area quarterback additions to the latest 2023 Prep Redzone Georgia Rankings.
Ty Watkins Ty Watkins 6'3" | 220 lbs | QB South Forsyth | 2023 State GA – South Forsyth
One of the top sleeper 2023 QBs in metro-Atlanta, Watkins is coming off a strong junior season in his first year as a starter. He lead a potent War Eagle offense through the air and did a great job of taking care of the football, throwing for 18 touchdowns to just two INTs. He also lead the War Eagles to 30+ points in six games last season. The rising senior does a nice job of pushing the ball down the field and getting the ball in his playmaker’s hands. He throws well on the run, throws with some zip, and is showed more and more leadership as the season went along. A big, thick QB at 6-foot-2 215-pounds, Watkins is trying to make more plays with his feet, and did so during their big 30-7 win over Central Gwinnett. He throws a catchable ball and puts some air underneath it for his speedy receivers to run under. If he continues to develop this off-season, he could lead the War Eagles to a giant season in 2022.
Cayman Prangley Cayman Prangley 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Kennesaw Mountain | 2023 State GA – Kennesaw Mountain
One of the top under the radar QBs across Georgia, Prangley is coming off an outstanding season for the fast-rising Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs last fall. The big 6-foot-2 215-pounder showed off a strong, accurate arm all season, but what he does best is take care of the football. The Kennesaw native threw for 25 touchdowns and just 6 INTs last fall. He’s accurate when throwing the ball over the middle and does a good job of distributing the ball to his receivers early in the play. He’s smart, knows what to do with the football, and showed leadership qualities as well, leading the Mustangs to one of their best seasons in school history. Prangley also showed that he’s a threat running the ball, picking up 312 yards and 7 touchdowns as a junior last year. He’s more than deserving of his new Prep Redzone Ranking.
Jalen Woods Jalen Woods 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Woodward Academy | 2023 State GA – Woodward Academy
One of the top quarterback prospects in Atlanta, Woods is a gunslinger with plenty of size at 6-foot-3195-pounds. He throws an accurate, catchable ball down the field, and knows how to hit his receiver in stride. He’s not much of a threat with his legs, but he knows how to make big throws 20+ yards down the field. He’s an excellent decision maker and only threw one INT last season. He looks the part, has natural arm talent, and holds D1 offers from Miami (OH) and Toledo. With a big spring, look for other college staffs to swing by Atlanta to check out Woods and his many talented Woodward Academy teammates. Woods has earned his new ranking, and he could see more offers come his way before the season starts.
Justin Johnson Justin Johnson 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Central Gwinnett | 2023 State GA – Archer
One of the most dynamic 2023 QBs in Gwinnett County, Johnson is still improving as a passer, but his raw arm talent and the ability to make plays with his feet made it easy to add him into the 2023 Prep Redzone Rankings. His stats won’t blow anyone away, but he makes a lot of plays as a dual-threat quarterback that you don’t see too often. He’s a good athlete and can turn a busted play into a big one. He throws well on the run, shows good footwork, and he’s only getting better as an overall passer. He’s a playmaker and picks up yards in a hurry when he has the ball. He’ll end his high school career at Archer and has a good chance of taking the Tigers back to the playoffs.
