The coaches at the Palmetto Combine Series Lower State event Saturday at Summerville didn’t need to see the awards presentation to know who the most productive defensive lineman was.
One by one, they were all raving about Wilson rising senior [player_tooltip player_id="146377" first="Chance" last="Cummings"].
Even at 5-foot-8.5 and 211 pounds, the likely college linebacker was not just holding his own against the rest of the defensive linemen. His body of work was dominant.
Cummings’ broad jump was considerably longer than any other lineman and most of his other measurables were in the top four for the position. He’ll be a third-year starter for the Tigers this fall after putting up 33 total tackles, seven tackles for loss and a pair of sacks in the highly competitive Region VI-4A last year.
Many of the other standouts Saturday also weren’t huge surprises.
COMBINE MVP
Hannah-Pamplico receiver [player_tooltip player_id="262679" first="Taeshaun" last="Sellers"] was named the Combine MVP. The speedster’s 40 wasn’t great, but his performances in the others were on the higher end of the scale. He also stood out during individual sessions, making a couple of nifty over-the-shoulder grabs that initially looked beyond his reach. It was a nice way to end the week after Sellers picked up his first offer from Presbyterian on Monday.
OFFENSIVE MVP
Like Sellers, Fort Dorchester quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="89345" first="Zolten" last="Osborne"] also received his first offers this week, getting the nod from Wingate and Newberry. On Saturday, the strong-armed signal caller put on a show. He recovered from a slip on an earlier attempt in the pro shuttle and bounced back to run the fastest of any quarterback in the event.
During sessions concentrating on footwork and throwing on the run, Osborne was also at or near the top of the list in the eyes of the coaches running or watching the event.
DEFENSIVE MVP
Defensive back Jakai Robinson of Stratford put up a 4.57 on the 40 on the back end of unit drills, good enough for first among all at the position. He also led the group in L-Cone and then locked down opposing receivers during one-on-ones. It all made up for the fact that he was an inch shorter than at least half of the other defensive backs.
OTHER INDIVIDUAL HONORS
40 Time: Maquez Spells, RB, Summerville, 4.40
Pro Shuttle: Khalil Robertson, DB, West Ashley, 4.13
L-Cone: Malik Horry, DB, Hanahan, 7.06
Broad Jump: Brenden Carter, DB, Stratford, 9 feet, 6 inches
Vertical Jump: [player_tooltip player_id="199432" first="Tanner" last="Staton"], QB, Brookland-Cayce, 37.9 inches
