Continue ReadingMay is finally here, yet the 2022-2023 football season is a long way’s away from today. Spring training is kicking off for several schools in the Magnolia state. With spring ball underway and 7v7 season in full swing, several programs are beginning to figure out which young prospects are ready to make an immediate impact! Mississippi’s 2024 and 2025 classes, collectively, are a pool of talent loaded with young skilled prospects. With the sport advancing in the manner that it has in recent years, many of these prospective student-athletes are poised to be reliable and constant contributors. This article details a few student-athletes that unquestionably fit the mold briefly explained. These guys will do big things in their Sophomore and Junior seasons for each of their respective programs.
Chris Davis Chris Davis 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Wesson | 2023 State MS | 6’0 170lbs | 2024 RB | Picayune
4.4 40yd Dash, 10.3 YPC, 953 yds Rushing, 17 TDs ; 2021 State Champion & 3.7 GPA
Chris Davis Chris Davis 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Wesson | 2023 State MS is a smart, two sport athlete out of Picayune,MS. Chris is a strong and lightning quick kid who averaged more than 10 yards per carry as a sophomore. I love his athleticism and balance as a runner, especially at this age. He gets up to top speed seamlessly, often hitting another gear to outrun opposing defenders. The explosion he displays at the line of scrimmage is breath-taking. If Chris gets around the edge of the defense with out being touched, forget about it. His highlight shows exactly what I am describing, so go and check it out if you don’t take my word for it. The youth of Chris shows within his game at times. Mainly when viewing the box to determine where he will attack the defense with his speed. Can you blame him? 4.4 speed as a sophomore definitely has that type of impact on a young players approach and execution. Over time his vision will improve for sure; no need to worry too much about that.
I was also impressed by his running style. He shows great burst and plenty of twitch while carrying the football. Chris’s running motion has a assertive fluidity to it, making the bevy of 20+ yard runs he put on tape look so easy! There were several runs on his tape where defenders had an angle on Davis, and it simply did not matter. With this kids frame, speed, and strength he has the holy trinity of what coaches expect from a 3-down RB. The combination of these attributes will prove to be a deadly combo against defenses he faces in the near future. The mind-blowing part is that Chris amassed these type of numbers while splitting carries with one of, if not, the most talented RB in Mississippi ( Dante Dowdell Dante Dowdell 6'2" | 215 lbs | RB Picayune Memorial | 2023 State MS ). Dowdell is entering his senior campaign with several offers on the board. I am certain that Davis’s role in the offense will continue to grow. This factor will only inflate the production output from Chris in his junior season this fall. Eventually Chris Davis Chris Davis 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Wesson | 2023 State MS will catapult into the spotlight, and by the time his senior year rolls around he will be a highly sought after student-athlete. Remember Chris Davis Chris Davis 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Wesson | 2023 State MS out of Picayune… Trust me!
Jeremy Scott | 6’4 180lbs | 2024 WR | Callaway
23 Rec, 533yds Receiving, 5 TDs, 24 YPC, 2INTs ; Baseball & Track (Sprinter & High Jumper)
Jeremy Scott is a young receiver out of Callaway HS who’s oozing with potential and has tremendous upside. Jeremy is a rangy kid standing at 6’4 180lbs. He is long with a decent frame on him, but his athleticism at that size is more impressive than his stature alone. Jeremy moves fluently and his film shows that he has plenty of elusiveness after the catch. Scott’s routes and breaks were a joy to watch because the majority of them were devoid of any wasted movements. The combination of Jeremy’s wiry frame and athleticism make his straight-forward approach to creating space effective. He understands his body and how to use it to his advantage, which is an attribute you love to see learned by student-athletes in high school!
Jeremy is a three sport athlete that participates in baseball and track along with football. It shows in how athletically-skilled he is to only be a sophomore. The 2024 3-star athlete uses his long strides and quick release on routes to get up on defender’s toes in a hurry. Jeremy is usually up to top speed on his routes within the first 3-4 steps. It is rare to see a receiver of his stature continuously outdo defenders in the secondary with YAC ability. His junior season will be his money year for sure! I would like to see him improve on his hand-eye coordination in the off-season. If he fine tunes this part of his game, there will surely be a noticeable increase in his production this fall from the last. As a sophomore he averaged 24 YPC, so the sky is the limit on what this kid can accomplish for the Chargers this Fall!
Silas Corder Silas Corder 6'1" | 210 lbs | QB Pascagoula | 2025 State MS | 6’0 190lbs | 2025 QB | Pascagoula
Mr.Corder is a budding young talent out of Pascagoula that showed some great things on tape to be a 2025 prospective student-athlete. Silas only appeared in about a third of the Panthers’ varsity games last year, but I was impressed with what he accomplished in those outings. Based on the reads and throws that he made as a freshman, he is swiftly grasping an understanding of different coverages and what those coverages allow. Silas is a 4.0 student and it definitely shows in how he processes what he is seeing on the field. He moves through his progressions promptly and does not show indecisiveness in what he reads, which usually plagues most young QBs. His throwing motion and technique show signs of him being a natural gun-slinger type of Quarterback. I would love to see him polish up his footwork. This adjustment will allow mobility within the pocket and allow him to get back on platform to make throws outside of the pocket as well.
Corder’s delivery of the football on throws with a high level of difficulty was impressive. His motion is quick and precise, which allows him to deliver the ball accurately and on time. He has the arm strength and awareness to deliver intermediate passes up the seam and has shown prowess in leading his receiver’s open. Silas has touch on passes outside of the numbers which is great to see from a freshman QB. What I was most impressed with viewing his tape was his ability to see the field and deliver throws while under pressure. Silas seems like he is a natural QB. His tape displayed his ability to make throws from sideline to sideline. The anticipatory throws are there as well. Depending on what the situation will be after this spring, Corder will find a way onto the field in order to contribute to Pascagoula’s passing attack this fall!
Quincy Phillips | 5’9 185lbs | 2025 RB | Madison-Ridgeland Academy
Lead team in rushing with 530yds, 6.6 YPC, 214yds Receiving, 14 tot. TDs
Quincy Phillips is a 5’9 185 pound back that plays monumentally bigger than what his measurements are! Quincy possesses respectable speed and great quickness that allow him to burst through the line of scrimmage on the vast majority of his carries. This kid is a natural runner with great vision. He excels in weaving through traffic within the trenches to find open space to break off big runs. Quincy’s stability and athleticism allow him to effortlessly run through arm tackles of defenders, while maintaining a decent level of speed. He has impressive footwork in and cuts to only be a 2025 prospect. He does not go east and west often, and if he does he quickly gets his shoulder back pointed north and south to gain any extra yardage that he can. These attributes mentioned are only the tip of the iceberg of the skill-set that Phillips provides for the Patriots each game.
As a freshman, Quincy filled a multitude of roles for Madison-Ridgeland Academy. He played running back, slot receiver, and was also a return specialist. He was effective in all three of the roles he assumed. Quincy showed his pass catching ability most often in the screen game. Whether it was coming out of the backfield or lined up at slot, Quincy has the ability to get open in a hurry and make things happen once he touches the ball. His deadly combination of speed and vision pop off his tape. When he gets involved as a pass catcher, he displays the innate ability to gain yards after the catch. The kid just simply needs the ball in his hands to be effective. I say this because the same prowess he shows as a factor in the screen game shows up on his kickoff returns. This kid is special and will be making headlines very soon in the immediate future. Quincy is a polished 2025 running back who brings an over-abundant amount of abilities to the table. Look out for him this fall for sure!
