Twitter Community Film Analysis: Part IV

We are back for another installment of this offseason’s Twitter submitted film analysis. The first three installments each had 10 ’23s from across WI. Today, we change it up by taking a look at soon to be seniors, juniors, and sophomores. The plan remains the same here. I will dive into the tape, identify the strengths of each athlete’s game, and then provide an area that they can work on this offseason. Let’s get it started! <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="323153" first="Garrison" last="Codde"], ’24 DB- Verona</strong> The 5’9" 155 lbs cornerback spent his sophomore year on the junior varsity, and will be looking to make the jump to varsity this fall. Watching through his 2021 highlights there are traits that give me confidence that he will be able to handle that jump to playing under the Friday night lights. The first thing needed to handle playing out in space at the varsity level is having the athletic gifts to succeed out there. Garrison has that. His overall speed stands out from the crowd at the JV level allowing him to make an impact as not only a DB, but also a returner. He also has the quickness and ability to quickly read and react to the QB while in zone coverage. Codde closes quickly and gets his hands in good position to break up passes. As for something to work on, I want to see how he grows and fills out his frame this offseason. If he can fill out his frame from that 155 lbs starting point while maintaining his fluidity it will help him be an effective tackler, as well as be able to fight off blocks, and be able to reroute receivers as they come off the line. We could be in for a breakout season and fast rise for Garrison this season. <strong>Brayden Wiczek, ’23 QB- Lakeland Union</strong> The 61" 165 lbs signal caller is a touch passer. Brayden wins by attacking the short to intermediate ranges with his ability to drop the ball in a bucket, over the shoulder, or between defenders at different levels of the field. He has solid footwork and a good connection between his upper and lower half. That touch and accuracy are the keys to his game because he doesn’t currently have the arm strength to win with velocity or by attacking small windows. That is his major area that he needs to show improvement to be able to be considered a next level prospect. If he can add muscle to his frame, and add the ability to put zip on the ball he will start to grab the attention of the next level. <strong>Rocky Wagoner, ’23 RB/LB- Lakeland Union</strong> Next up is the 6’ 180 lbs two way player, and teammate of our previous athlete. On offense, Rocky has crafted himself into a three down threat as he is just as dangerous taking a hand off as he is taking a swing pass out of the backfield. On the ground, Rocky has the speed to threaten breaking contain on every touch to the outside.  I came  away impressed with Wagoner’s vision with the ball in his hands. He finds his blocks quickly, sees cutbacks, and times his cuts well to make defdnders miss. Rocky is predominantly a one cut runner, but he has the one step lateral agility to make people miss in one on one situations. Where I want to see him improve on offense is his work between the tackles. He possesses solid contact balance, but I want to see more overall power in his play proving that he can get the tough yards and move the pile when needed. That would really round out his game. On defense, Rocky is a rangy, sideline to sideline LB who is at his beset when he can flow with the play, shoot through gaps with his burst and closing speed to make plays. He has proven that he can fight across a block at times, but just like on offense, I want to see his strength and power take a step forward so that he can handle playing at the next level. This is a new athlete for me that I am looking forward to following this fall. Intriguing prospect. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="269163" first="Matty" last="Burnette"], ’23 DB- Onalaska</strong> Onalaska has a solid cornerback prospect in soon to be senior [player_tooltip player_id="269163" first="Matty" last="Burnette"]. The 6’ 165 lbs athlete really caught my eyes with his awareness and discipline in zone coverage. The first INT on his highlight tape shows Matty doing a great job of not biting on a route crossing his face, and instead he stays home in his zone, reads the QB, and slides into the passing lane for the pick. In man coverage, Burnette is aggressive at the line, and has the reactive athleticism to be able to react quickly to the WR’s breaks. Where I want to see Burnette make an improvement this season is at the catch point in his man coverage. A lot of his film shows him not getting his head around to be able to play the ball. If he can consistently lean and feel the receiver while looking back for the ball it will allow him to not only break up passes, but create turnovers. I’m excited to see him this fall. Coming off a solid 7 PBU, 1 INT season. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="300114" first="Connor" last="Johnson"], ’23 WR- Nathan Hale</strong> The 5’11" 170 lbs slot receiver has a lot of the tools needed to succeed out of the slot at the next level. He has the necessary play speed, but is quicker than fast. That athleticism paired with a solid ability to change direction quickly. All that working together has allowed him to create separation with route running on a snap to snap basis. Connor has a natural ability to also find the soft spots in coverage. Where I want to see Johnson take the next step is after the catch. I want to see him be able to make defenders miss as well as run through tackles at a more consistent basis. If he can get his after the catch as dangerous as his pre-catch then he will have a very well rounded game. Check him out. He had a n impressive 4 game stretch before injury. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="219500" first="Nico" last="Patti"], ’23 DB- Menomonee Falls</strong> The 5’11" 175 lbs DB is a prospect that has the potential to be a riser in the rankings this fall. Nico is a rangy safety prospect who, while undersized, is an effective, solid tackler. Menomonee Falls asked Nico to line up deep, and be able to make plays at the line of scrimmage against the run. Patti was able to succeed in that role thanks to his aggressive downhill play style. In coverage, Nico is best playing a deep zone where he can read and react and use that range to quickly close on the catch point. Where I hope to see Nico improve is in his change of direction. That would allow him to be even more effective covering a deep zone or it would allow him to cover receivers one on one. Basically it would add another aspect to his game, which would increase his value to the next level. Keep an eye on him. He is a talented basketball player as well. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="245475" first="Cooper" last="Licari"], ’24 QB- Pewaukee</strong> The 5’10" 170 lbs QB looks like the next man up for State Champion Pewaukee. Looking at his varsity reserve tape you see a QB who was asked to make a lot of plays on the run, and he stepped up to the request. Licari was limited in his arm strength this past fall, so he won by focusing on winning in the short to intermediate rage with ball placement. He can maintain his accuracy while off balance or without having his feet set. Where he will need to improve is the arm strength and velocity part of his game. He has a couple years to work on that and continue to grow. Keep an eye on both areas because if he can win the QB1 job for Pewaukee then he definitely earned it by taking his game to the next level. <strong>Nico Vultaggio, ’25 OL- Madison Memorial</strong> We are looking at just the beginning of an intriguing future for the Madison Memorial OL. The freshman already checks in at 5’11" 260 lbs. I’m excited to see how he grows, and molds his body over the next few years. His paly in the run and pass game shows that he has the early signs of a good prospect. As a run blocker, Nico is able to get to the second level to block LBs, and he can create a push in the trenches. As a pass blocker, Nico is able to slide easily as he mirrors his young opponents. I have Nico highlighted as someone to watch the next three seasons. Where I want to see him improve is with his flexibility and his body control. As he continues to grow and develop his body he will have to also learn how to effectively move it in the most efficient ways possible. Bright future.
