When the 2021 season came to a close, Wheeler only had 1 victory to look back on. Regardless, their mix of veteran and young talent makes them an intriguing team for 2021 and beyond. From a young QB with tons of ability to a defensive line that can dictate the outcome of a game, Wheeler has some of the most underrated talents in the state. One would have to think that this boom of talent will eventually lead to a breakthrough on the field for the Wildcats.
Players to Watch
Ty Holiday – DL – 6’2 280 – 2023
With two offers from Furman and Morehouse College, Ty Holiday is one of the more decorated players on roster for the Wildcats. He blew onto the scene during the 2021 MVP Camps, where he came away as one of the top performers in his position group. That showing at the camp would eventually translate to the field. In 2021, Holiday finished with 61 tackles, 24 TFLs, and 7 sacks. His efforts landed him an All-Region selection. As a senior, Holiday is looking to build off a breakout junior season. With another year of experience under his belt, Holiday has the ability to turn into an even more dominant player on the defensive front.
Renardo Lewis – DL – 6’0 270 – 2023
Lewis and Holiday make for an extremely physical duo on the defensive front. Like Holiday, Lewis has also picked up some offers from schools like Charlotte and Morehouse College. Lewis is an extremely explosive prospect that lived in the backfield last season. On the year, Lewis finished with 59 tackles, 17 TFLs, 7 sacks, and 3 QB hurries. His unique ability to rush the passer from the interior makes him a super intriguing prospect for some schools. Lewis was one of the top DL performers at the 2022 Adidas All-American Combine, so the current trend is that he will take an even bigger step forward in 2022.
Julian Stevenson – LB – 6’0 210 – 2023
Stevenson, a multi-sport athlete with wrestling and track, is another prospect that has gained some exposure from camp circuits. In fact, he gained an invitation to the 2022 Adidas All-American Combine and put up a nice showing. On the field, Stevenson is a head hunter that plays with tons of effort and intensity in the middle of the defense. On the year, Stevenson finished with 89 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 TFLs, 2 QB hurries, and 2 PBUs. Stevenson is all over the field for the Wildcats and is the definition of a playmaker. While he has no recorded offers to date, Stevenson has taken numerous visits to schools and has put himself on the map after a strong 2021 year.
Jabril Abdur-Rahim – OL – 6’2 280 – 2024
Abdur-Rahim is a younger prospect, but he is already one of the most physically impressive prospects in the 2024 class. To go along with his size, he also has a competitive edge and nasty streak that makes him almost impossible to get by. Once he ties everything together and grows into his frame, he has the ability to be a real difference-maker on the offensive front. While he has no offers at the moment, Abdur-Rahim has made some stops at some camps this offseason and has been impressive. If he can continue this current trend and have a good junior season, Abdur-Rahim could see some offers come his way.
Marcus Romain – QB – 6’1 185 – 2025
Romain had to grow up in a hurry on varsity last season as the starter, but he showed plenty of promise and potential. In fact, it is a pretty common consensus that he is one of the better QBs in the state as far as 2025s are concerned. Where he really made an impact last season was on the ground, where he ran for 255 yards on nearly 7 YPC and found the endzone once. Romain doesn’t take sacks and has some nice touch on the deep ball. With his athletic ability and arm talent, it is easy to project Romain to have a prosperous career. If he can tie things together in the passing game this season, then Wheeler will be a sleeper team to watch out for throughout the season.
Other Players to Watch: 2025 RB Josiah Allen, 2025 DB Elijah Muhammed, 2024 LB Tre’Vaughn Callhoun
Must-See Games
Lassiter – August 26th
Last season, Wheeler suffered a heartbreaking loss to Lassiter by a score of 27-21. That game was a road game. In 2022, Wheeler will open up the season by hosting Lassiter. To go along with the usual hype of a season opener, this should be a highly emotional game for a Wheeler team that came so close to knocking off the Trojans last season. This game has drama written all over it and is one you should keep track of.
at North Cobb – October 14th
Anytime you get to play a team like North Cobb you get a unique opportunity to prove yourself and make a statement. That is exactly what Wheeler will look to do when they travel to North Cobb in October. To make things even better, this is a matchup between two teams that rarely get to see each other.
Cherokee – October 7th
A week before the Wildcats lineup against North Cobb, they’ll take on Cherokee. Thankfully, this is a home game. Some of the best matchups between teams are the ones where two powers from different counties play each other. Here, we have a Cherokee County and Cobb County matchup in early October between two teams with plenty of talent.
