It’s almost May. Here are 5 more prospects (Part 3) winning the off-season as we head towards what should be an exciting 2022 campaign:
[player_tooltip player_id="137935" first="Brayden" last="Mummert"], Cibola: Mummert has played some defensive end in his career but it now appears he’s focused on tight end and punter. He was All-State as a tight end after finishing the 2021 campaign with 24 receptions for 318 yards and 2 TD. An outstanding blocker also. With a 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame and excellent mobility, he’ll be coveted by college coaches. San Diego State and the University of San Diego have invited him to their June camps. New Mexico has expressed interest.
[player_tooltip player_id="137928" first="Kellan" last="Gehres"], Albuq. Academy: Gehres clearly isn’t satisfied after catching 67 passes for 1,111 yards and 12 TD and earning First-Team All-State honors for the Chargers in 2021. He’s putting himself through some grueling workouts under the watchful eye of strength & conditioning coach Ben Wysong, a former Lobos player. He hopes the hard work pays off in the fall when Albuquerque Academy will have one of the most explosive offenses in Class 4A.
Elijah Romero, Belen: A wide receiver playing in Belen’s run-dominated attack, Romero showed flashes of his potential last season with a team-high 12 receptions for 260 yards and 5 TD. In short, nearly half of his receptions resulted in touchdowns as Romero emerged as a reliable red zone weapon. Romero weighs 165 pounds but benches 225 pounds. He ran a 4.69 40 at a camp on Sunday. If he can get his speed into the 4.5-4.6 range, he’ll attract increasing interest from college coaches.
[player_tooltip player_id="137891" first="Adam" last="Pacheco"], Pojoaque Valley: The dynamic Pacheco led the Elks offense to one of its best seasons in years in 2021, throwing for 1,257 yards and 17 TD. When he wasn’t passing the football, he was usually handing off to New Mexico Highlands signee [player_tooltip player_id="198250" first="Dominic" last="Esquibel"]. Few New Mexico players have been as busy as Pacheco fielding camp invitations. Eastern New Mexico, University of Rochester, Elmhurst University, Rose-Hulman and Ivy League school Brown have all expressed interest.
[player_tooltip player_id="138053" first="Cayden" last="Walton"], Raton: Arguably the top running back in New Mexico, Walton earned a spot on this list just for the colorful outfit he wore to the recent state esports championships. But that suit doesn’t hide Walton’s talents. He was our 2021 Class 3A Player of the Year after leading the state in rushing with 1,905 yards and 24 TD on 188 carries. He has already amassed nearly 5,000 career rushing yards. Two thousand rushing yards in 2022 is not out of the question. He should generate plenty of recruiting interest in the fall.
