Here we take a look at Oregon’s leading candidates offensively for 6A Player of the Year honors heading into next season. As most know being selected a conference or state POY has very little to do with recruiting. A lot is determined by the team’s overall success as well as what the athlete does himself...
<strong>OFFENSE</strong>
1. [player_tooltip player_id="152354" first="Cru" last="Newman"] QB 24’ Central Catholic- As a Sophomore Newman was the Mt Hood Conference Offensive POY and the PRZ state player of the year, after throwing 37 TDs/4 INTs, and leading his team to the 6A title. He’s special and will be a heavy favorite to repeat.
.[player_tooltip player_id="110180" first="Mark" last="Hamper"] ATH 23’ West Linn- Hamper has a real shot of being the player of the year on both sides of the football. His 11.4 yards per rush and 13.6 yards per reception average, spoke to his versatility as a Junior, totaling 1,258 yards and 12 TDs in 11 games.
.[player_tooltip player_id="110171" first="Sam" last="Leavitt"] QB 23’ West Linn- The 3* QB made the move from Westview after a phenomenal junior campaign where he passed for 26TD’s/3 INTs, hitting on 60% of his passes in 9 games, before a tough season ending loss to Tualatin
.[player_tooltip player_id="110178" first="Jack" last="Wagner"] QB 23’ Tualatin- Wagner could be the conference and state POY in my opinion. He’s that good. With [player_tooltip player_id="28854" first="Jackson" last="Jones"] getting a majority of the reps last year folks aren’t necessarily aware. To put his overall athleticism into perspective, the 6-4 185-pound athlete rushed 50 times last season at QB, averaging 12.3 yards per carry.
,[player_tooltip player_id="110209" first="Jordan" last="Fisher"] RB 23’ Westview- Fisher broke out as a Junior averaging 9.56 yards per carry, while totaling 1,549 yards and 26 TDs. With the transfer of [player_tooltip player_id="110171" first="Sam" last="Leavitt"] and the graduation of WR’s [player_tooltip player_id="28833" first="Darrius" last="Clemons"] and [player_tooltip player_id="143912" first="Drew" last="Bennett"], the Cats will rely heavily on the run game putting even more emphasis on the very versatile back.
.[player_tooltip player_id="110187" first="Brock" last="Thomas"] QB 23’ Sheldon- Thomas was unreal as a junior, literally putting the team on his back at times. He accounted for 43 TDs (22 passing, 21 rushing) and close to 4000 total yards in 10 games. He is one of the top dual threat QB’s anywhere in the West. Look for him to have a big year with a line and a lot of talent returning.
.[player_tooltip player_id="110242" first="Ryan" last="Oliver"] QB 23’ Lakeridge- Another kid who I believe has the potential of being a major D1 recruit. His 29 TDs/ 7 INTs starting the last two seasons are just a glimpse of what he could do. I would expect an unreal senior year statistically, with 4* [player_tooltip player_id="152356" first="Joey" last="Olsen"] and fellow 2023 standout WR [player_tooltip player_id="110204" first="Baylor" last="Corbin"] returning.
.[player_tooltip player_id="205822" first="Payton" last="Roth"] RB 23’ Jesuit- I could see Roth breaking records and being the conference and state POY. He has that type of potential. Last season he went down early with an injury after multiple TDs & 200+ yard performances.
.[player_tooltip player_id="104685" first="Riley" last="Williams"] TE 23’ Central Catholic- It’s not often a TE wins POY accolades, but Williams might be the exception to the rule. One of the nation’s top tight ends projects as a state statistical leader, after an unreal junior campaign where he finished second in receiving TDs during the regular season (11).
.[player_tooltip player_id="152363" first="Nolen" last="Scott"] RB 24’ Sherwood- I expect Scott to be the best overall player in the conference this coming season. He will have a legit shot of being the POY on both sides of the football after an incredibly impressive sophomore campaign where he accounted for 1,519 total yards and 10 TDs, also earning 1st team accolades as a kick returner.
.[player_tooltip player_id="152356" first="Joey" last="Olsen"] WR 24’ Lakeridge- It will be tough to double team Olsen with all of the talent surrounding him. Over the last two seasons the state’s #1 recruit has caught 50 passes, averaging 21.5, ypc and 11 TDs.
.[player_tooltip player_id="152337" first="Wiley" last="Donnerberg"] WR 24’ West Linn- Look for Donnerberg to have a player of the year type season. The 2nd team all-league WR as a Sophomore could be he TRL’s top two-way threat along with teammate [player_tooltip player_id="110180" first="Mark" last="Hamper"].
.[player_tooltip player_id="147244" first="Luke" last="Ash"] RB 23’ Clackamas- Ash will most likely get 25-30 touches per game, so he could very well put up some ridiculous #s next season. Look for the 1st team all-league returner to come back even stronger after rushing for close to 1200 yards and 19 TDs, averaging close to 9 yards per carry in 2021.
.[player_tooltip player_id="147861" first="Luke" last="Leighton"] WR 23’ Sheldon- Leighton earned 1st team all-conference honors on both sides of the football. I would consider him maybe the top recruit in the state without an offer yet. His 43 catches for 660 yards and 8 TDs put into perspective how talented he is.
.[player_tooltip player_id="110179" first="Drew" last="Rodriguez"] 23’ WR Sprague- The 3* athlete projects on the defensive side of the ball but was instrumental on offense, earning 1st team all-conference accolades on O, D, and as a kick returner. His overall versatility was unmatched within the league. (Since this was initially published Leighton landed Air Force)
.[player_tooltip player_id="206846" first="Cayden" last="Eckel"] RB 24’ Roseburg- Most aren’t aware of Eckel yet, quietly having a 1st team all-conference sophomore season, while helping to put the Indians back on the map. RHS returns one of the more impressive lines in the state so he could have a monster year statistically.
