It’s imperative to be able to line it up and knock guys back to gain a first down in any situation. By personal definition, a mauler is someone that has the ability to overwhelm a defender at the point of contact. The big fellas listed below are some of the few that have stood out to me so far.
Drew Perez – Southlake Highschool- Class of 2023
My first time seeing him up close was at the trench king challenge where he did a great job being patient and violent at the point of contact.
What I stood out to me was his body control, posture and strain to finish. With his size, length, and movement skills I predict that his recruitment is about to blow up.
The 6’8, 330 pounder plays for the historic Southlake High program and is making the shift to left tackle from right and will be a huge key to their success and running game next season.
Sam Liu – Parish Episcopal- Class of 2024
Sam Is coming off of some big performances this summer and has solidified himself as a top player in his class and in the state.
He recently picked up a huge offer from SMU and has had a huge summer so far.
What makes Sam special is the pop that he has in his hips and once he gets latched onto a defender it’s hard for them to get his hands off. He is tough, smart, coachable and has proved why he was rated so high in the initial PrepRedzone class rankings.
Brione Brooks – South Oak Cliff High school – Class of 2023
When you think of a offensive linemen that is a mauler in the state, Brione Brooks should be the first name that comes to mind. The 6’5” 360 pound rising senior has had a huge summer and went viral from his dominating performances.
For example, at a Rivials camp he took a pass set, snapped off a nasty punch and completely eclipsed the defender. After covering him up he easily threw the defender out of the drill and ran him into the sideline.
The closest thing I’ve ever seen to it was on the TV show called the “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” when the character Uncle Phil threw DJ Jazzy Jeff out of his house. Besides making defenders look silly I’ve seen a tremendous amount of improvement with his body control and technique from the first time seeing him at the prepredzone showcase a year and a half ago. He also recently picked up a offer from the University of Oregon.
Noah Weeks – Argyle High school – Class of 2023
Noah is a stout center prospect out of Argyle high. He has to he right mindset and has done a good job developing his posture, punch and overall technique. His core strength has improved tenfold since my first time seeing him about a year ago. He possesses the ability to functionally play either guard or center. Along with having the ability to long snap he helps he is primed for a huge fall. Versatility equals value and he is setting himself up for future success by being able to step in at more than one position.
