Class 4A is extremely competitive, and we’re seeing some top defenders emerge across the state in that particular classification. Last fall there were multiple sophomores who emerged as impact defenders across the state.
Bryce Baker – Benedictine
One of the more productive defenders in the area, playing for a winning program, Baker made an immediate impact as a sophomore last year, making 129 total tackles, 12 TFLs, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He can read an offense, dissect plays, and can explode into the backfield to make a play. He’s quick, instinctive, and knows how to deliver a big hit when it’s needed. He plays above his age and appears to know the game very well for his age. If you don’t block him, he’s going to blow up any particular play. He’s a playmaker against the pass as well, and if the ball if throw in the middle of the field, he’s going to attempt to make a play on it. He’s fun to watch, tackles well, and could see some college interest come his way this spring after a breakout sophomore season.
Devin Collier – Lee County
A fast-rising sophomore linebacker, the former Dougherty star will now be at Lee County, giving the Trojans another hard-hitting defender. Collier is one of the top young linebackers in South Georgia and showed off impressive ball skills last fall. He also proved to be a sure tackler, making 103 stops last fall as a sophomore. He’s smart, instinctive, runs well, and knows how to wrap up properly. He can get to the sideline, and in coverage, knows how to separate the ball from thee receiver. He can dissect plays well and plays with a physical presence. He had at least 10 tackles in seven games last fall, proving to be one of the more productive 2024 linebackers in 4A.
Sebastian Amerson – East Forsyth
The fresh East Forsyth football program is on the rise up towards Lake Lanier, and they have a sophomore linebacker who shines in the program’s first season. A hard-hitting defender, Amerson was a bright spot on the Broncos defense and knows how to deliver a hit. He’s quick, strong, and he’s a physical tackler, forcing three fumbles on the season. He’s built well at over 200+ pounds and more than held his own last year as a sophomore in 4A ball. He was one of the more productive linebackers in his region last fall, making 79 tackles and 8 TFLs.
Wilkes Albert – Benedictine
Another Benedictine standout, Albert may not be a flashy linebacker, but he’s extremely productive and knows how to tackle. He gives plenty of effort and does a nice job of running down the ball carrier. He’s tough, strong, and does his job each and every play. He’s always around the football. He made tackle after tackle all season, making 105 tackles on the season. He guards the middle of the field and shows strong instincts and physicality for his age. He made over 100 tackles as a sophomore, so he’s one to know about for the next two seasons.
