Big shock, it’s the quarterback position.
And at eight of those schools, the players in those roles and what we could see out of them in the weeks ahead will be crucial. Here’s a quick run down of those eight and what they mean to their teams – in May and beyond.
Banks Lovett, Green Sea Floyds
As a 5-foot-11, 150-pound junior, Lovett was sort of an afterthought to the somewhat one-dimensional offense – especially after quarantines kept the Trojans on the shelf for a few extra weeks. This season, Lovett will be expected to continue to increase his completion percentage, something he began to achieve toward the end of 2021.
Daniel Stanley, Aynor
When Stanley averaged nearly 12 yards per carry last year, it wasn’t just in garbage time situations after the senior starter took a break. Stanley forced himself into the mix of the Blue Jackets’ run-heavy offense and finished with 585 yards rushing and four scores.
Jaret Yonker, Waccamaw
Among the most physically imposing signal callers on the Grand Strand, Yonker’s 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame stands out even more at the Class 3A level. The Warriors plan to squeeze even more out of his senior season. Last year, Yonker put up 1,347 total yards and 10 touchdowns.
Jackson Huff, Loris
By July heading into his freshman season, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback had started to turn heads. By the midway point of the season, it was clear Huff (pictured) was the future of the Loris offense. The staff put him into the lineup on the varsity, gave him quality snaps in the final six games of the year and watched as he progressed without any pressure.
Wyatt Cannon, Myrtle Beach
The Seahawks have sent a number of their quarterbacks to the college ranks, including the last two to South Carolina and Appalachian State, respectively. While Cannon isn’t at that level yet, this program’s ability to develop the position is not to be ignored. The staff will expect him to improve – but also lead.
Rocco Wojcik Rocco Wojcik 5'11" | 165 lbs | QB Socastee | 2024 State SC , Socastee
If the first two seasons of his varsity football career were Wojcik dipping his toes in the water, it’s time he jump right in now. The third-year Braves starter has some reliable weapons and a system that’s been in place since he walked in the door. Depending on how long he’s tied up with baseball might be the only thing holding back some spring development.
Scott Saylor Scott Saylor 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Carolina Forest | 2023 State SC , Carolina Forest
It was safe to say Saylor caught everyone off-guard when in his first two games as a starter last fall he put up nine total touchdowns and 512 total yards. He plateaued some as the season went on and some of the pieces around him were mixed and matched. Still, expectations for his abilities will be quite high in the coming weeks as the Panthers adjust to a somewhat depleted offense.
Devin Grainger Devin Grainger 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Conway | 2024 State SC , Conway
While he may not be the best quarterback in this neck of the woods yet, Grainger has so far proven he may have the highest ceiling. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound dual threat threw for 1,412 yards and ran for a couple hundred more (not including sacks). He’s a true athlete with plenty of varsity experience in multiple sports despite having two years of high school left.
