The event, which will be followed by an Upper State and Lower State camp in the days to follow, is one of three in the series and will help determine spots selections for the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl and the Joanne Langfitt Junior Showcase. (It is still not known if the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas will draw from this combine.)
And while many of the names who were invited are well known to even the state’s casual football followers, we’ve picked out a few seniors who could use the Midlands combine to put themselves front and center well in advance of the 2022 football season.
Colson Brown, QB, North Augusta
After sharing reps at the position last year, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound has the job to himself at North Augusta this year under new coach Matt Quinn. Brown has the type of frame that could stand out at the combine. And since those who matter already know about the pro-style quarterback’s arm strength, any athleticism he shows in the combine drills will make him stand out that much more.
Harley Fox, LB, Lexington
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound linebacker is a contact junky (he also plays lacrosse) and is exactly the type of fierce competitor that can excel in Perry Woolbright’s defense at Lexington. Had it not been for an injury last year, his name would be everywhere. That’s because in just three games, he tallied four solo tackles, 10 more assists, six for loss and an interception. His senior season could be special.
Trey Horne Trey Horne 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Rabun Gap | 2024 State GA , WR, Wren
Horne was expected to be the Hurricane’s starting quarterback last fall as a junior until freshman upstart Gavin Owens Gavin Owens 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Rabun Gap | 2025 State GA burst onto the scene. Horne spent the year bouncing around a little bit behind center and on the outside (he threw for 443 yards, rushed for 281 and caught another 262). Now, the potential standout receiver is locked in and could take on the look of an elite receiver.
Jesse Ross, RB, White Knoll
We get why Ross (pictured) is going to be one of the more overlooked tailbacks in the Midlands entering the fall. He played mostly defensive back last year. But we know two things about him that most don’t. First, he’s grown an inch and put on about 15 pounds in the last four months. And, this is a big one, he crushed his showing at the Joanne Langfitt in December. It was then that he crushed the 40, vertical jump, broad jump and bench en route to winning his group rankings.
Marcus Washington, RB, Silver Bluff
With Traevon Dunbar Traevon Dunbar 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Midland Valley | 2024 State SC having transferred to Midland Valley, Washington is going to get the bulk of the carries for a team that is absolutely loaded on both sides the ball after making the Class 2A title game. Washington averaged 6.2 yards per carry and tallied 313 yards and five scores a year ago as a back-up. We expect his performance to be the next stage of proving how valuable he could be for a team expected to contend again.
