Considering South Carolina has just shy of 10,000 prep football players between the SCHSL and SCISA ranks, it’s an inevitable part of the process. But even now, with two months before our next ranking update, we’re constantly looking for talent.
We want you to see what we’re looking at.
In our weekly series dubbed the Community Film Room, we’re going to break down players who have yet to find their way into the rankings. Maybe they’re young, haven’t had a chance to get their film out or – yes, it’s entirely possible – we just missed them the last time around.
In Episode 12, a long defensive tackle, a tight end who fits into his offense like a glove, a tailback who could double up on last year’s production, a slot receiver about to do the same and a quarterback capable of catching fire early.
Evan Phillips, TE, Midland Valley
At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Phillips is a bigger body whom the Mustangs can use in a different way. Essentially, he’s frequently lining up in the slot. Why do they do this? Phillips isn’t going to outrun many, but he’s quick with his direction changes and sure handed as all get up. He caught 20 passes last year despite missing three games. In 2022, he’s going to be a first-down machine for a team that is going to surprise some folks.
Kam Williams, RB, Boiling Springs
If we learned anything spending so much time around Matt Reel’s teams at North Myrtle Beach, it’s that he gets the best out of his running backs. In Reel’s first year at Boiling Springs, Williams is the first apparent beneficiary of the power style. Last year, Williams (pictured) ran for 743 yard and five scores while pulling in another 21 receptions for 185 yards. He cuts well and knows how to follow blockers. Don’t be surprised if he has fewer carries but many more yards.
Jacob Cotterill, DL, Summerville
Not often do you hear about an interior defensive lineman described as “rangy.” Cotterill, at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, fits the bill. And while he moves well for the position, it’s not very likely that he stays there forever. His coaches believe he has the frame to be a mid-level offensive lineman at the college level after a couple more years of high school growth take hold. For now, he’s going to keep shooting gaps for the Green Wave.
Luke Baumhofer, WR, Christ Church
Since the beginning of last season, the shifty interior receiver has grown to 5-foot-8 and a 170 pounds. That’s a good thing, as Christ Church is keeping the ol’ band together and he’s going to become an even bigger part of the offense. Last year, he was a reliable player (27 receptions, 338 yards, four touchdowns and 20 punt returns for 197 yards). Next time around, his stats could blow up as the offense continues to blossom amid so many returning pieces.
Bryan McCartt, QB, Wilson
The position was a bit of a revolving door last year at Wilson, where four different players attempted multiple passes in at least three different games. However, moving forward, it appears McCartt will get first crack at running this offense moving forward. He’s got a trio of great receivers in Zandae Butler, Jyron Waiters Jyron Waiters 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Wilson | 2024 State SC and Donnell Williamson Donnell Williamson 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Catawba Ridge | 2023 State SC , above-average arm strength and just enough mobility to keep the top-end defenses of this region honest.
